• Slapped with an NC-17 by the MPAA, the film was pulled from Lionsgate's After Dark Horrorfest '8 Films to Die For' lineup rather than be cut; it instead got a limited unrated U.S. theatrical run (about 10 screens for one weekend, grossing under $10,000) before shipping on DVD as an 'Unrated Director's Cut.'
• Made on roughly a $3 million budget as a France-Switzerland co-production and distributed by Luc Besson's EuropaCorp. Director Xavier Gens also helmed the 2007 video-game adaptation Hitman for EuropaCorp the same year — but Hitman actually reached theaters (November 2007) before Frontier(s) got its wide French release in January 2008.
• It's a cornerstone of the New French Extremity wave alongside Martyrs, Inside, and High Tension — the boundary-pushing French horror movement (a term coined by Artforum critic James Quandt) defined by extreme bodily violence shown in unflinching detail.
• Gens openly modeled the cannibal-family material on Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and 1970s grindhouse, right down to the screaming dinner-table sequence with the captive seated among the clan.
• The patriarch, ex-SS officer Von Geisler, was played by veteran French actor Jean-Pierre Jorris (born 1925), who was in his early 80s during the shoot; he died in 2017.
• Gens has said the story grew out of his fear during the 2002 French presidential election, when far-right National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen shockingly reached the second-round runoff — the film opens with Paris in flames over a fictional far-right victory.

The whole picture is a horror allegory for French politics eating its own future. The opening riots over a far-right president aren't backdrop — they're the thesis. The Geislers are simply fascism with the mask off: the same ideology the protesters fear, taken to its logical end in a cellar. Yasmine refusing to surrender her baby to the family is the country refusing to let the extreme right write the next generation.

Read it as a Holocaust echo built into the architecture. The inn sits over a mine where escapees are run down like vermin, the 'rejected' deformed children are kept below as living waste, and the patriarch's obsession with purity and breeding is eugenics staged as family dinner. The horror isn't invented monsters — it's history that never actually left the building.

Yasmine's arc rewrites the final-girl formula as deliberate inversion. She's not virginal or innocent — she's a pregnant criminal, the 'impure' outsider the family wants to cleanse and repurpose. Her survival isn't luck or chastity; it's her becoming the exterminator, dismantling the bloodline one member at a time. The closing image of her blood-drenched and surrendering to police reads less as rescue than as a woman who's seen exactly what she's capable of.

Paris burns over a far-right candidate's election, and a gang of young thieves uses the chaos to cover a robbery. They split for the German border and hole up at a backwoods inn, not realizing the place is run by a clan of cannibal neo-Nazis presided over by an unrepentant SS patriarch, Von Geisler. He wants pregnant Yasmine alive — a brood mare to seed his Aryan bloodline. The others are meat or sport. What follows is dinner-table degradation, mine-shaft mutants, and a blood-soaked clawback as the only survivor turns the family's gospel of purity back on them.
