Ganja & Hess

• Kelly-Jordan Enterprises commissioned it in 1972 on a $350,000 budget, asking for a straight 'Black vampire film' to ride the Blacula wave. Gunn reportedly said the last thing he wanted to make was a Black vampire film, then took the job specifically to turn vampirism into a study of addiction and assimilation.
• It was the only American film selected for Critics' Week at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, where it drew a standing ovation and ecstatic French reviews while the U.S. industry response stayed cold.
• Spooked by weak box office, the financiers pulled it and distributor Heritage Enterprises hacked the 113-minute cut down to roughly 78 minutes, rescored it, and reissued it as Blood Couple (also Double Possession). Film doctor F.H. Novikov (aka Fima H. Noveck) took the director credit; Gunn disowned the butchered version entirely.
• The original negative was destroyed during the recut. For years the only way to see Gunn's actual film was a single surviving print held by the Museum of Modern Art, which later anchored the Film Foundation / Kino Lorber restoration.
• Duane Jones, who played Ben in Night of the Living Dead, stars as Hess Green; Marlene Clark plays Ganja; and Gunn himself plays George Meda, the assistant who stabs Hess and triggers the curse.
• The score is by Sam Waymon, Nina Simone's brother, who also acts in the film. Spike Lee remade it as Da Sweet Blood of Jesus in 2014, crediting Gunn as co-writer and carrying over Waymon's song 'You've Got to Learn.'

The vampirism is addiction with the serial numbers filed off. Hess hides bloody evidence like a junkie hiding a stash, raids a blood bank, and frames the whole sickness as a thing done to him by an older civilization. Read that way, the Myrthian curse is generational dependency and the film is about how respectability and wealth never inoculate you against the hunger underneath.

Hess and Ganja are two answers to the same trap. Hess walks into the revival church and lets the shadow of the cross over his heart kill him, choosing Christianity and erasure as the price of redemption. Ganja refuses the cure and keeps the power, ending the film very much alive. The split reads as a debate over assimilation versus self-possession, with the Black church framed as both rescue and surrender.

The three stab wounds (one for the Father, one for the Son, one for the Holy Ghost) plant the Christian frame before any blood is drawn, and the curse that only a cross can break sets African ritual and Western religion against each other for the whole runtime. The horror isn't the fangs; it's that survival demands trading one belief system for the one that colonized it.

Dr. Hess Green, a wealthy Black anthropologist studying the blood-drinking Myrthians, gets knifed three times with an ancient ceremonial dagger by his cracking-up assistant, who then kills himself. Hess doesn't die. He wakes up immortal and thirsty. When the assistant's widow, Ganja, comes hunting her missing husband, the two slide into a marriage built on hunger and money. Bill Gunn buries a vampire picture inside a study of addiction, class, faith, and assimilation, where salvation and self-destruction wear the same face and the cross is the only weapon that works.
