PLOT
  • Shinya Tsukamoto pulled quadruple duty as director, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor, the same one-man-crew control he ran on the Tetsuo films, only here aimed at his first period film, a Meiji-era setting instead of industrial cyberpunk.
  • It's freely adapted from Edogawa Rampo's 1924 short story 'Soseiji' ('The Twins'), which is written as a death-row prisoner's confession to a priest about murdering his identical twin and stealing his life.
  • Masahiro Motoki plays both brothers, the buttoned-up doctor Yukio and the slum-bred double Sutekichi (whose name roughly means 'abandoned fortune'), two performances built as opposite behavioral registers so the twins read as different men before they start to blur.
  • Costumes came from Michiko Kitamura, who had worked as a consultant to Rei Kawakubo, and she dressed the slum-dwellers in wild, vividly colored, theatrical getups with no historical accuracy, rather than period-correct clothing, to widen the visual gulf between the classes.
  • Chu Ishikawa, Tsukamoto's longtime composer from the Tetsuo films, scored it, anchoring the film on a menacing, tape-looped chant that builds in intensity across the runtime.
  • Takashi Miike directed a 17-minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the shoot, titled 'Tsukamoto Shinya ga Ranpo suru' (roughly 'Shinya Tsukamoto Does Rampo'), reportedly made as a personal favor out of respect for Tsukamoto.
