Ginger Snaps

• Made for roughly $4.5 million, the film was part-funded by Telefilm Canada (about $1.25 million) and a similar amount from the Canadian Television Fund — public money that turned toxic when, after the April 1999 Columbine massacre and a copycat shooting eight days later at W.R. Myers High in Taber, Alberta, the Toronto Star ran a piece attacking taxpayer dollars going to what it framed as a teen slasher movie.
• The backlash hit hiring directly: six Toronto-area casting directors refused to work on the production, rattled by the recent high-school shootings and the film's violence and murdered teenagers, which forced the team to open casting in Vancouver, Los Angeles and New York instead of just Toronto — the move that let Vancouver-based Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins audition at all.
• Director John Fawcett refused CGI and built the transformation entirely through prosthetics, makeup and a creature designed to read as exposed skin and muscle rather than the usual fur-suit wolf. Katharine Isabelle sat up to seven hours in the makeup chair for the late-stage looks and another two hours getting them off.
• Screenwriter Karen Walton was initially reluctant to take the job, wary of horror's reputation for weak characters and ugly treatment of women — until Fawcett convinced her the film would reinterpret the genre. She then wrote it with explicit feminist intent, anchoring the lycanthropy to female puberty rather than to the male monster tradition.
• Principal photography ran October 25 to December 6, 1999, shooting around suburban Ontario — a Scarborough school for Bailey Downs High, Brampton for the Fitzgerald house exterior, and a Meadowvale Village park in Mississauga for the attack scene.
• It premiered August 1, 2000 at Munich's Fantasy Filmfest but didn't get a Canadian theatrical release until May 2001, where it grossed only about CAD $425,000 domestically before its real life began on home video and the cult circuit.

The lycanthropy is puberty made literal, and the film knows it — Ginger is attacked the night she first bleeds, the curse spreads through sex and contagion, and the silver 'cure' reads as a culture obsessed with medicating young women back into compliance. Read this way the monster was never the wolf; it's everyone insisting Ginger stay small.

Brigitte, not Ginger, is the real protagonist of a doomed codependency. Their 'together forever, united against life' pact is the actual horror engine: every step Brigitte takes to save her sister is also a refusal to let her grow up and away. The final basement scene plays less as a kill than as a sibling unable to survive the other's separation.

The town itself is the sickness. Bailey Downs is staged as suffocating, identical, lethally boring — the sisters' death-photo hobby is the only honest response to it. The werewolf doesn't invade a healthy place; it gives a numb, conformist suburb the one thing it's been starving for: an appetite, a body, a way to feel something before sixteen.

In dead-end suburban Bailey Downs, death-obsessed sisters Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald have a pact: out by sixteen, or out together. Then Ginger gets her first period the same night something feral drags her into the dark and bites her open. The wounds heal too fast. She grows hair in strange places, an appetite for boys and blood, a tail. Brigitte races a local drug dealer's silver-laced cure against the full moon while watching the only person she loves harden into something that no longer needs her. Sisterhood curdles into survival.
