Goodnight Mommy

• The debut narrative feature for co-directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (aunt and nephew), produced by Franz's husband Ulrich Seidl. The premise was sparked while they were editing a documentary and watching reality-TV makeover shows in which mothers vanished for months and returned with surgically rebuilt faces; in one episode a child looked at the made-over woman and said 'that's not my mum.'
• To find the leads, the directors phoned Austrian schools asking for twins and screened roughly 130 pairs before casting real-life brothers Elias and Lukas Schwarz. The film was shot largely in chronological order and the boys were never given the full script, so they discovered each scene's developments on the day it was filmed.
• The terrarium scene used around 2,000 Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Susanne Wuest asked to raise a couple herself before the shoot, named them Matilda and Nermal, and a real roach crawls across her face on camera (the moment it enters her mouth was finished with CGI). Matilda earned a 'stunt roach' reputation and afterward went to live with one of the film's makeup artists.
• Wuest's bandaged look took about two hours of prosthetic and bandage application each shoot day, leaving her barely able to see, smell, hear, or breathe; she said the painful sensory deprivation and the extreme remoteness of the location did the character work for her.
• It premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 71st Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2014. The isolated modernist house and pond were shot in the tiny village of Haugschlag in Lower Austria near the Czech border, with some additional scenes in the surrounding Waldviertel area.
• Austria submitted it for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards; it was not nominated, though it won the Méliès d'or for best European fantastic feature in 2015. The English-language trailer was hyped by outlets as one of the scariest ever cut, even as many critics complained the central twist is easy to guess long before the reveal.

The whole film is grief seen through a surviving twin's denial. Lukas never eats, never speaks to the mother, and is only ever addressed by Elias; she sets a single place at the table and insists 'there is only you.' Read that way, Lukas died before the story begins, and Elias's refusal to accept it is what fuels the certainty that the bandaged woman is an imposter rather than a wrecked, mourning parent.

The bandages weaponize the audience's own uncertainty. We're never given a clean before-and-after face, so the question 'is this even the mother' is left genuinely open and we side with the boys against her. The surgery isn't just plot, it's the device that strips identity down to behavior, and the behavior we read as sinister is just as easily a grieving woman policing the house where she lost a child.

The cockroach terrarium is the boys' small kingdom of control over life and death, which is why the mother crushing the roaches reads as the first true act of war. When she kills what they keep alive, she breaks the one system where they still hold power, and the torture that follows is them reclaiming authorship over who lives and who is exposed as false.

A summer of cicadas and corn fields, and a modernist house where young twins Elias and Lukas wait. Mother comes home wrapped head to toe in surgical bandages, snapping at noise, locking doors, killing the boys' beloved cockroaches. The boys decide this woman is an imposter. What starts as a child's suspicion curdles into restraints, glue, and a lit match, the camera refusing to flinch. Franz and Fiala build the dread out of domestic stillness, then let it detonate. By the time you understand what you're watching, it's already too late.
