Hansel & Gretel

• The candy-house aesthetic was the work of production designer Ryu Seong-hie, who also dressed Oldboy, Memories of Murder, and The Host. Yim Pil-sung had her build a doll's-house in Technicolor primaries so the prison would read as a child's paradise first and a trap second.
• Yim told the Georgia Straight the production bought or borrowed period toys from vintage collectors to fill the house, and the pieces were valuable enough that the production carried insurance on the old toys and props.
• The youngest cast member, Jin Ji-hee, was reportedly having too much fun on the toy-stuffed set to land a melancholy scene, so Yim had her favorite crew members keep their distance from her that morning until she sank into the sad mood he needed.
• It was only Yim Pil-sung's second feature, following the 2005 Antarctic survival horror Antarctic Journal. CJ Entertainment released it in Korea on December 27, 2007, at a 117-minute runtime.
• The film traveled the genre-festival circuit in 2008, picking up a Best Film nomination at Spain's 41st Sitges Film Festival and a Special Mention at Korea's own Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.
• The backstory anchors the children's powers to a Christmas: an abused orphan wishes Santa Claus into existence, and the figure who answers leaves them a Hansel and Gretel storybook that becomes the rulebook for the world they then build and rule.

The house isn't a haunting, it's a child's idea of safety taken to its logical end. Everything the kids were denied at the orphanage — sweets, toys, parents who can't leave — gets manufactured on loop, which is why the candy never spoils and the door never opens. The horror is that a traumatized kid's wish for a stable home, granted without limits, becomes a cage for everyone caught inside it.

Eun-soo functions as the adult the children are auditioning, not abducting. The film keeps testing whether he'll behave like the caretaker who beat them or the parents who abandoned them, and his offer to take them out into the real world is the wrong answer precisely because it asks them to trust the adult world again — the one thing the orphanage taught them never to do.

The fake parents trapped in the attic are the children's running experiment in rebuilding a family from kidnapped strangers, and every visitor is a redo of the same broken trial. Read that way, the cottage is less a fairy tale than a loop of foster placements gone wrong, with kids holding the power adults once held over them and finding that it still doesn't manufacture love.

A salesman wrecks his car on a lonely highway and wakes in a forest, led by a little girl to a candy-bright cottage called the House of Happy Children. The parents are terrified, the toys never run out, and the front door never leads anywhere but back inside. The three children running the place were orphans once, beaten and worse, until a storybook and a Christmas wish handed them the power to bend the world to their wants. Now they collect adults, and they have decided this one will stay forever.
