Happy Birthday to Me

• Columbia Pictures poured roughly $4 million into the marketing campaign, an amount in the same neighborhood as the film's entire $3.5-4.7 million production budget, betting the whole thing on the murders.

The whole 'evil twin in a latex mask' reveal lands so abruptly because, by multiple accounts, the producers forced a twist ending into the shoot that the original script never contained. Read the movie as two films stitched together: a genuinely unsettling study of a brain-damaged girl who can't trust her own memory, hijacked in the final act by a who-done-it nobody seeded. The disjointedness is the production fighting itself on screen.

The kills only make sense as performance, not murder. Each death is staged to humiliate the Top Ten on their own terms, the motorcycle kid by his bike, the gym rat by his weights. The killer isn't just clearing the room, she's writing each victim an obituary tailored to their vanity, which is why the violence feels theatrical rather than practical.

Crawford Academy's class warfare is the real engine. Virginia's surgically rebuilt mind and her bought-in spot among the elite make her a stand-in for someone clawing into a class she wasn't born into, and the killer's grudge is, underneath the mask business, pure resentment of inherited privilege taken out on the kids who never had to earn it.

Virginia Wainwright runs with the Top Ten, the spoiled in-crowd at Crawford Academy, but her memory has holes in it and a recent skull surgery only made them worse. As her birthday closes in, her clique starts dying off in absurdly specific ways: a barbell crushing a throat on the weight bench, a shish kebab down the throat, a scarf caught in motorcycle spokes. Virginia keeps blacking out around the bodies, convinced she's the one doing it. The trauma behind her brain surgery, and the question of who's really wearing whose face, is the rot this whole thing is built on.
