PLOT
- Columbia Pictures poured roughly $4 million into the marketing campaign, an amount in the same neighborhood as the film's entire $3.5-4.7 million production budget, betting the whole thing on the murders.
- The MPAA repeatedly slapped the film with an X rating for its violence, including Amelia's axe-to-the-skull death. Columbia had to truncate the gore across multiple resubmissions before it earned an R.
- Special makeup effects went to Tom Burman, who was brought in to replace Stephan Dupuis just three weeks before cameras rolled.
- Glenn Ford, an old-Hollywood star coming off decades of leading-man roles, took the part specifically because he admired director J. Lee Thompson's earlier work.
- Shot July through September 1980 around Montreal, using the Loyola, Concordia, and McGill campuses for Crawford Academy, with the bridge sequences filmed near Phoenix, New York, outside Syracuse.
- The infamous shish-kebab poster carried the tagline 'John will never eat shish kebab again' about a character named John who doesn't actually exist anywhere in the finished film, marketed under the line 'Six of the most bizarre murders you will ever see.'
