Hatchet for the Honeymoon

• The Italian title is Il rosso segno della follia, 'The Red Sign of Madness.' This Italian-Spanish co-production was shot largely in Barcelona at a villa that had belonged to dictator Francisco Franco, with police on the grounds during filming because of fears the fake blood would stain the building.
• Bava deliberately gutted the giallo formula. Instead of hiding the killer behind black gloves until the final reel, Harrington is shown butchering brides from the opening scene and confesses straight to the audience in voice-over: 'I am a paranoiac... the truth is, I am completely mad... a dangerous murderer.'
• The supernatural hook is an inversion of every haunting cliche. After Harrington kills his wife Mildred, her ghost trails him everywhere, but he's the only one who can't see her, while every cop, maid, and stranger talks to her like she's alive, until the final scene flips it and she becomes visible to him alone.
• Tim Lucas, the definitive Bava scholar, calls this the director's most personal film in his biography 'Mario Bava: All the Colors of the Dark.' Bava spent years in an unhappy marriage, and critics read Harrington's loathing of his wife, and the idea that he can kill any bride he wants but his own wife will never leave him, as the closest Bava came to autobiography.
• Lead Stephen Forsyth, a Canadian, walked away from acting around the time of this film, soured on the roles he was getting. He returned to Canada and reinvented himself as a composer and multidisciplinary artist, making Harrington one of his final screen credits. He died in 2025.
• The production nearly collapsed mid-shoot. The budget ran dry and forced a hiatus, and the entire subplot of Harrington's marriage to Mildred was reportedly written in to give actress Laura Betti a meatier part after she asked Bava to put her in the film.

The ghost is Harrington's conscience made literal. He can murder a bride and feel nothing, but he cannot escape Mildred precisely because his guilt won't let him see her, only feel her hanging on every shoulder around him. The day he finally scatters her ashes and lets go is the day the film closes the loop, the punishment isn't being haunted, it's being the only one who can't look the dead in the eye.

The brides are all the same kill on repeat. Harrington's compulsion is a reenactment, he's chasing the recovered memory of his mother's murder and trying to relive it through every wedding gown. The bridal veil he dons during a slaying, lifted straight from Psycho, isn't disguise, it's him stepping into both roles at once, the boy with the cleaver and the woman who died, trying to feel the moment that broke him.

Bava is dissecting his own genre and his own marriage at the same time. The mannequin-stuffed salon, the satin gowns, the obsession with beautiful surfaces over rotten interiors, it's the giallo eating itself, and a man who builds gorgeous things while quietly hating the woman beside him. Read that way, the murders are a fantasy of escape from a marriage neither Harrington nor his director could leave.

John Harrington runs a Paris bridal salon and a private incinerator, hacking down young brides with a meat cleaver because each killing drags him one inch closer to a buried memory he can't quite reach. Bava throws out the giallo rulebook on page one: no black-gloved mystery, no whodunit. Harrington narrates his own madness to camera from the first reel. Then he murders his hateful wife Mildred, and the film flips into something stranger. Her corpse stays gone, but her ghost stays put, and everyone on earth can see her but him.
