High Tension

• Made for roughly $2.5 million, the film grossed somewhere around $6.3-6.8 million worldwide (sources differ). It's set in the south of France but was shot almost entirely in Romania, near Bucharest, where rural locations that doubled for the French countryside came far cheaper.
• The practical gore came from Giannetto De Rossi, the Italian effects veteran behind Lucio Fulci's nastiest work. To get the arterial spray right, the crew consulted a coroner on real blood trajectory, which is part of why the kills read as anatomy rather than spectacle.
• Lionsgate first floated an uncut NC-17 US release, but exhibitors balked, so about two minutes were trimmed for an R. The cuts softened the bookcase decapitation of Alex's father and shortened the concrete-saw and throat-slash kills; an unrated DVD in 2005 restored the full runtime.
• Aja admitted at Sundance in 2004 that he'd read Dean Koontz's novel Intensity, and the first half is nearly identical in setup. Koontz reportedly declined to sue, saying he found the film too 'puerile' and 'intellectually bankrupt' to want the association that a lawsuit would bring.
• Cécile de France won Best Actress at the 2003 Sitges Film Festival for the role and took the EFP Shooting Star prize at the Berlin International Film Festival the same year.
• For the US release the English dub rewrote the family as Americans with a French country home, to justify mixing English and French dialogue. The dubbing was widely panned as out of sync with the actors' mouths; Roger Ebert called it 'lip-flap on parade.'

Read straight, the twist is a cheat; read as Marie's fantasy, it's airtight. Everything we 'see' is her dissociated account, so the impossible geography of the killer's truck appearing where Marie should be is the point, not a goof. The film isn't lying to us by accident; it's showing us a mind editing its own crime in real time, which is why the surveillance-tape moment that contradicts her version lands like a slap.

The killer's truck, the rusted blade, the grubby blue coveralls all code working-class brute, while Marie is the bookish outsider crushing on her wealthier friend. The split lets her project the violence onto a class type she both fears and desires, externalizing want as a monster so the desire stays clean. The horror is class and longing wearing the mask of a stranger.

The chase reads as a closet drama turned slasher: Marie can only act on her feelings for Alex through a self she refuses to recognize. The film has been fairly criticized for tying queerness to madness, but the more generous read is that the monster is repression itself: a desire so unspeakable it has to arrive as someone else's hands.

Marie tags along with college friend Alex to her family's isolated farmhouse, expecting a quiet weekend of cramming and crushing. Instead a hulking stranger in a work truck butchers Alex's family in the dark and drives off with Alex chained in the back. Marie gives chase, slipping through the killer's blind spots, doing whatever the rescue demands. Then Aja detonates the floor: the predator and the rescuer were never two people. What you watched and who you watched it through stop matching, and the chase curdles into something far worse.
