PLOT
- The whole film exists because of a leftover prop. Producer Bernard Gordon and director Eugenio Martin had a train mockup left over from their Western 'Pancho Villa' (which also featured Telly Savalas), so Martin reverse-engineered a script just to reuse it. Gordon later debunked the popular rumor that the train came from 'Doctor Zhivago' or 'Nicholas and Alexandra.'
- It was shot on roughly $300,000 in Madrid, with only one train-car interior set available. The production filmed every scene for a given car in one go, then physically rebuilt and redressed the same set to become the next car down the train.
- Peter Cushing nearly walked off the picture before it started. Filming over the winter of 1971 was his first Christmas since the January 1971 death of his wife Helen, and he told producer Bernard Gordon he couldn't do it. Christopher Lee talked him into staying by sitting with him and reminiscing about the films they'd made together.
- The score is the feature-film debut of John Cacavas. Cacavas and star Telly Savalas were friends, and Cacavas went on to compose music for Savalas's hit TV series 'Kojak.'
- Savalas was a bargain. Producer Bernard Gordon paid him about $22,000 for his short, scenery-shredding stint as the Cossack captain Kazan and considered it a steal for a name that size.
- A U.S. distribution rights snafu dropped the film into the public domain in the States for decades, which is why it circulated for years in beat-up gray-market prints from countless budget labels (and free on the Internet Archive) before restored editions arrived.
