Horrors of Malformed Men

• The original Japanese title is 江戸川乱歩全集 恐怖奇形人間 (Edogawa Rampo Zenshu: Kyofu Kikei Ningen) — roughly 'Edogawa Rampo Complete Works: Terror of Malformed Humans.' It's not one Rampo adaptation but a patchwork stitched from several of his stories, primarily Strange Tale of Panorama Island (1926) and The Demon of the Lonely Isle (1929-30).
• The island's mad patriarch Jogoro is played by Tatsumi Hijikata, co-founder of butoh, the post-war Japanese avant-garde dance form built on physical extremity and grotesque contortion. The writhing, malformed islanders were performed by a real dance troupe, so much of the deformity onscreen is trained-body movement, not just makeup.
• It wasn't an official government ban — it was the studio. Toei pulled the film through jishu kisei (corporate self-censorship) after it drew protest on release, partly over the slur in its title and partly because the deformity imagery was read as insensitive to hibakusha (atomic-bomb survivors). Toei buried it for roughly three decades.
• Because of that self-suppression, the film got no home-video release in its own country until 2017 — nearly half a century after it came out.
• The West saw it on disc long before Japan did: Synapse Films and Panik House put out a region-1 DVD on August 28, 2007, and Arrow Video followed with a new 2K restoration on Blu-ray (released September 18, 2018).
• Lead Hirosuke is played by Teruo Yoshida, a Tokyo medical student with no memory of his past; Jogoro's congenital webbed fingers are the engine of the entire plot — his shame over the deformity is the motive behind every horror he manufactures on the island.

Jogoro isn't building monsters — he's building company. A man humiliated his whole life by his webbed hands answers it by surgically remaking everyone around him in his own image, so that on his island deformity is the norm and he, finally, is not the freak. The whole tribe of hybrids is one shame-driven act of revenge against a world that recoiled from him.

The amnesia frame turns Hirosuke's investigation into a horror of inheritance. Every clue he chases toward his 'true' identity drags him closer to Jogoro's bloodline and his methods — the closer he gets to who he is, the more he risks becoming the thing he's hunting. The mystery isn't whodunit, it's how much of the monster is already in him.

Casting butoh dancers as the malformed reframes the freakshow as performance about the post-war body itself. Hijikata's circle spent the 1960s using contorted, broken movement to externalize national trauma, so the island's grotesques read less like medical horror and more like a wound made flesh — which is close to the reading that made Toei nervous enough to bury the film for decades.

An amnesiac med student breaks out of an asylum, gets pinned for a murder he can't remember, and crawls out the other side by stealing a dead man's name and bed. The fraud drags him to a private island ruled by a webbed-fingered patriarch who breeds people and animals into shrieking hybrids out of pure spite for his own deformity. Teruo Ishii throws Rampo's detective logic in a blender with carnival-grotesque flesh and butoh contortion, and the closer the truth gets, the less anyone wants it. Fireworks, sutures, and a confession that detonates the whole bloodline.
