• Made for roughly $100,000 and clocking 56 minutes, Host grew out of a real Zoom prank: in early 2020 Rob Savage faked investigating noises in his attic on a group call, splicing in a jump scare lifted from the Spanish found-footage film Rec (2007). It went viral and Shudder turned it into a feature.
• The whole project went from idea to finished film on Shudder in about 12 weeks, with the actual remote shoot pulled off fast during 2020 lockdown. Savage never set foot in a single actor's house. The cast ran their own cameras, lit their own rooms, did their own makeup, and rigged their own effects while he directed over Zoom.
• There was no traditional screenplay. Savage, Jed Shepherd, and Gemma Hurley built a 'scriptment' framework, and the actors improvised the dialogue. The characters even carry the performers' own first names: Haley Bishop plays Haley, Jemma Moore plays Jemma, Emma Louise Webb plays Emma, and so on.
• Practical gags were pulled off socially distanced and roughly 95% in-camera, with actors' own partners rigging stunts under remote supervision. Stunt performer Jinny Lofthouse was hauled into the air on a quick-release wire and dropped into a pool, and another character, Teddy (Edward Linard), genuinely had his face set on fire. Fishing wire was mailed to actors' homes so they could fly objects off shelves themselves.
• Savage front-loaded the schedule, shooting the biggest stunts and scares first, so that if the fast remote production fell apart later they'd already have the showpiece scares in the can.
• It landed on Shudder on July 30, 2020, posted a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score (around 99% across roughly 90-plus reviews), and the buzz fast-tracked Savage into a three-picture deal with Blumhouse, his follow-up being the found-footage road-trip film Dashcam.

The horror is punishment for bad faith, not bad luck. Jemma invents a fake dead friend to spice up the séance, and the entity that answers is essentially the lie made flesh: a presence with no real name, no real grief, attaching itself to the one person who treated the ritual as a joke. Read that way, the demon isn't random. It's the séance's stated rule ('don't disrespect the spirits') enforced to the letter.

Host weaponizes the specific dread of 2020: the screen as the only window left, and the suspicion that the people in your little grid boxes are already gone before you can do anything. The gallery view becomes a body count you watch helplessly in real time, which is why the kills land harder than the budget should allow. The medium dropping off the call early is the moment the safety net of expertise vanishes and the tech is all that's left.

The face-filter beat is the film's thesis in one shot. When a distorted face appears and the group assumes someone left an effects filter running, the joke is that we've been trained to misread the supernatural as a glitch. Host argues the screen doesn't protect you from the uncanny, it disguises it, letting the real thing hide inside the digital noise we've all stopped questioning.

Six friends, bored and rattled by lockdown, hire a medium to run a séance over Zoom. Haley takes it seriously. Jemma, the joker, fakes a dead-friend backstory to liven things up, and that lie cracks a door no one can close. The medium drops off the call. Something else logs on. As the spirit moves house to house through their webcams, the gallery view becomes a kill order, and the meeting ticks toward a hard cutoff none of them will outlast.
