The opening 70% statistic reframes the whole movie as an argument that the real monster was the moral panic itself. The Ulmans aren't proof the paranoid parents were right — they're the rare exception the hysteria invented thousands of false cases to find. Read against the slow-burn structure, the film is less about the cult and more about economic desperation: Samantha takes a job any sensible person would refuse purely because she's broke and wants out of a bad roommate situation. A broke college sophomore takes a too-good-to-be-true babysitting gig at an isolated Victorian during a lunar eclipse. There's no kid — just an elderly mother upstairs and a husband, Mr. Ulman, whose calm is worse than any threat. Ti West makes you wait, and wait, stretching a single dread-soaked night across slow zooms and dead air until the Satanic-panic hysteria the opening title card warned about stops being statistics and starts being real. When the trap finally springs, the patience pays a brutal dividend.
