PLOT
  • The only film in history to put Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine in the same scenes. Other movies got two or three of them, and Scream and Scream Again parked Lee and Price in the same picture but barely the same room. This is the lone time all four genre legends actually share scenes on screen, produced by Cannon's Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus as a four-name box-office draw.
  • It was the 24th and final time Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing shared the screen, closing out a partnership that ran back through the Hammer years. It also stands as Cushing's last horror picture.
  • Pete Walker's last theatrical film, period. The man behind grimy British shockers like House of Whipcord went out directing the polite old guard instead of his usual nastiness, then walked away from features for good.
  • Based on Earl Derr Biggers' 1913 novel Seven Keys to Baldpate — the locked-house mystery George M. Cohan turned into a hit stage play — this was one of the last in a long line of screen versions, roughly the seventh, arriving about 70 years after the source. Earlier adaptations carried the original title; this one renamed everything.
  • Shot in five weeks at Rotherfield Park in Hampshire, England, standing in for the Welsh setting (the script's manor is Bllyddpaetwr). The production reportedly ran out of money about three weeks into the shoot.
  • Elsa Lanchester — the Bride of Frankenstein herself — was originally cast as Victoria Grisbane but had to drop out through ill health. Pete Walker regular Sheila Keith stepped in, her fifth and final film for the director.
