Housebound

• Feature debut for writer-director-editor Gerard Johnstone, who came up through New Zealand television and co-created the sitcom The Jaquie Brown Diaries before pivoting to horror-comedy.
• Made on a shoestring through the New Zealand Film Commission's Escalator low-budget scheme, which capped funding at NZ$250,000; the production's reported cash budget ran around NZ$350,000 (commonly cited as roughly US$400,000), stretched further by an estimated NZ$1.5 million of in-kind support and by confining the action largely to a single house.
• World-premiered at SXSW on March 10, 2014, screening in the festival's Visions section, where it earned a nomination for the Visions Audience Award and built the buzz that drove its international pickup.
• The infamous menacing toy is a knockoff Teddy Ruxpin-style talking bear with dying batteries that warp its voice into a demonic growl, weaponized into one of the film's signature gags, a grown woman brawling with a possibly-possessed stuffed animal.
• James Wan was so taken with how Johnstone balanced scares and laughs here that he tapped him to direct M3GAN (2023); Johnstone went on to co-write and direct M3GAN 2.0 (2025).
• New Line Cinema acquired U.S. remake rights in February 2015 with Johnstone attached to produce, and in December 2016 brought in screenwriter Chris Borrelli to adapt the script.

The house-arrest setup is the whole engine, not a gimmick. Kylie can't leave, can't walk away from her mother, can't escape the past she's been running from since she was a kid, so the film weaponizes the haunted-house formula as forced family therapy. The 'ghost' is really proximity: lock a damaged person in a room with the people and history they've avoided and watch what crawls out.

The genuine creepiness early on isn't undercut by the eventual rug-pull; it's recruited by it. Johnstone front-loads real haunted-house dread so that when the explanation turns earthbound and human, the audience has already invested in being scared, making the human menace land harder than any spectre would. The horror was never supernatural; it was the mundane wearing a ghost costume.

Kylie's arc reframes the 'final girl' as the town problem child. She's introduced as the unlikeable delinquent everyone wrote off, and the mystery only cracks because she's too stubborn and too cornered to behave. The film argues the survivor isn't the pure one, it's the one nobody could control.

Kylie Bucknell is a foul-mouthed petty criminal whose botched ATM heist earns her eight months of home detention, ankle monitor and all, back in the childhood house she fled. Trapped with her chatterbox, supernatural-obsessed mother and shadowed by Amos, the keen amateur-ghost-hunter security officer assigned to her monitor, she dismisses the talk of a haunting until the bumps in the dark stop being deniable. What starts as a sulky exile curdles into something nastier: the house has a body count, the supernatural may be a smokescreen, and the real threat is closer to the floorboards than anyone wants to admit.
