Huesera: The Bone Woman

• The bone-snapping horror was done with no CGI. Director Michelle Garza Cervera staged the impossible angles using contortionists rather than digital effects, and the sound came from real foley work. Lead actress Natalia Solian can crack her own joints on cue, and that habit became part of the film's signature noise.
• It was Garza Cervera's feature directorial debut, and at the 2022 Tribeca Festival it won both Best New Narrative Director (a $10,000 prize) and the Nora Ephron Award (a $20,000 prize for first-time female filmmakers, in its 10th year), a rare double for a film that premiered in the festival's genre-heavy Midnight section.
• Garza Cervera co-wrote the script with Abia Castillo, reworking it through roughly thirteen rewrites over about three years. The punk subculture Valeria abandons is pulled straight from the director's own life. She played in Mexico City punk bands for years and credits punk with giving her 'the tools to start questioning everything.'
• The sound design makes bone the monster's calling card. The spirit announces itself through cracking and snapping, and the film weaponizes Valeria's own habit of cracking her knuckles until an ordinary tic turns into dread.
• The title comes from La Huesera, the Bone Woman of folklore, an old woman who gathers scattered bones in the desert and sings a skeleton back to life. In the original tale the bones are a wolf's, and the wolf she sings alive runs off and turns into a laughing woman. The archetype was popularized in English by Clarissa Pinkola Estes in 'Women Who Run With the Wolves.'
• XYZ Films picked it up for distribution. It grossed roughly $1.6 million theatrically against a tight budget and took the Audience Award for best feature at the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico.

The 'curse' is postpartum psychosis wearing a folk-horror mask. Every appearance of the bone creature lines up with Valeria's mounting panic and dissociation, and the cracking-bones motif literalizes the feeling of a body no longer hers. The supernatural frame lets the film say the unsayable thing about new motherhood without ever having to confirm a ghost is real.

The Bone Woman isn't an attacker, she's a rescuer Valeria refuses to recognize. In the folklore the Huesera reassembles broken skeletons and sings them alive. Read that way, the spirit is hunting Valeria not to destroy her but to gather the pieces of the queer punk self she dismembered to fit motherhood, and the final break is a reassembly, not a death.

Octavia is the haunting, not the demon. Valeria's old flame is the door the whole supernatural assault walks through. Every contorted vision intensifies as her buried desire resurfaces, framing the horror as compulsory heterosexuality eating a woman alive from the inside. The bones snap because she bent herself into a shape she was never built to hold.

Valeria gets the baby she's supposed to want, and her body starts coming apart to pay for it. A pregnant Mexico City woman who once ran punk and worked wood with her hands finds something snapping in the dark near her crib, a faceless contortionist that announces itself with the wet crack of bending bone. The pregnancy curdles into possession, the possession into the old life she buried: her ex-flame Octavia, the self she sanded down to fit a nursery. Motherhood here is the haunting, and the only exit is breaking yourself back into shape.
