Hwanyeo '82

• This is the final film in Kim Ki-young's Housemaid trilogy: the black-and-white 1960 original, the 1971 color remake Woman of Fire, and this 1982 reworking. He spent over two decades returning to the same story of a maid detonating a household.
• Where the 1960 original was shot in black-and-white Academy ratio, both remakes were made in color and widescreen scope, with cinematography on the '82 version by Jung Il-sung.
• Kim relocated the domestic horror to an industrial chicken farm run by the wife, and the film directly references the disposal of the male birds as a running motif about whether the man is even needed.
• Rat poison is seeded early as a kitchen prop the wife warns could kill the chickens or the children, and it ends up deployed on far more than rats, one of the trilogy's signature escalations.
• The film opens on the murder already committed, the bodies of the composer and the maid found near the farm bearing twelve knife wounds, then tells the story backward through a letter left by the maid, a framing device the 1960 original didn't use.
• Kim Ki-young died alongside his wife in a house fire in February 1998, not long before a planned trip to a retrospective of his work at the Berlin International Film Festival, just as the West was finally rediscovering him.

The chicken farm isn't set dressing, it's the thesis. Male chicks get sorted and disposed of because they don't lay; the composer husband is the rooster who's only good for one thing, and the film keeps asking whether the household, like the farm, could run without him at all. The murder is the farm logic finishing its sentence.

The wall of clocks the husband winds before sex turns desire into something mechanical and scheduled, infidelity as another appointment on the farm calendar. The chiming crescendo mocks the idea that any of this passion is spontaneous; it's all wound up, timed, and running down toward the bodies in the opening shot.

Telling the whole thing through the dead woman's letter makes her the author of her own destruction and the only voice that survives it. The men investigate; she narrates. In a film soaked in Confucian rules about where a woman belongs, the structure quietly hands the corpse the final word.

Kim Ki-young dragged his own Housemaid back from the dead a second time, and by 1982 the rot had spread to the henhouse. Two corpses, stabbed full of knife wounds, turn up by a poultry farm outside Seoul; the rest unspools from a letter the dead maid left behind. A composer, his hard wife who runs the farm, and the country girl hired to work it grind toward each other through infidelity, rat poison, and a wall of clocks.
