I Walked with a Zombie

• RKO handed producer Val Lewton the lurid title before a single page existed - it came from a 1943 American Weekly magazine article by Inez Wallace. Lewton thought the source material was too cliched, so he rebuilt the story on the bones of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, calling his vision 'Jane Eyre in the West Indies' - Curt Siodmak wrote the first draft and Ardel Wray did a full rewrite toward that model.
• Lewton worked under RKO's hard B-picture leash: every film had to come in under roughly $150,000 and run shorter than 75 minutes. The finished cut clocks 69 minutes.
• This was the second of director Jacques Tourneur and Lewton's collaborations, sandwiched between Cat People (1942) and The Leopard Man (1943).
• Trinidadian calypso singer Sir Lancelot was cast as the island's Calypso Singer, performing original songs that fold local commentary and folklore directly into the narrative rather than just scoring it.
• Darby Jones plays the towering, bug-eyed sentinel zombie Carrefour, the image most people still picture when this film comes up - his name is French for 'crossroads.'
• The garden statue Ti-Misery is the figurehead of the slave ship that brought the island's first Black inhabitants - an effigy of Saint Sebastian pierced with arrows, kept as a memorial to slavery, and it pays off in the plot when Wesley pulls one of its arrows to kill Jessica.

The 'zombie' is a red herring - the real monster is the plantation itself. Ti-Misery, the slave-ship saint bristling with arrows, sits at the center of the estate, and every white character's misery radiates outward from the sin it commemorates. Jessica's frozen state reads as the family's guilt made flesh: a household that profited off the chained dead cannot stay among the living.

The film never confirms whether Jessica is supernaturally cursed or just a fever-damaged invalid, and that ambiguity is the point. The famous walk through the cane fields stages two competing explanations - Western medicine and Vodou - and refuses to crown a winner, leaving Betsy (and us) unable to say which world is real.

Carrefour and the Vodou practitioners are framed not as villains but as the only characters acting with clarity. The houngan summons Jessica, the Calypso Singer narrates the white family's scandal in song, and the island's Black community essentially diagnoses and judges the Holland clan - the horror belongs to the colonizers, not the colonized.

A Canadian nurse takes a post on the Caribbean island of St. Sebastian, hired to tend the catatonic wife of a brooding plantation owner. The woman drifts through the house in a white shroud, neither dead nor awake, and the locals have a name for what happened to her. When medicine fails, the nurse walks her patient through the moaning cane fields to a Vodou houmfort, hunting a cure the white household refuses to name. What she finds is a family rotted by guilt and an island that remembers every chain.
