Inferno

• Mario Bava worked uncredited as visual-effects and second-unit man. He hand-built the New York skyline from milk cartons covered in photographs and painted mattes, and stepped in to direct scenes when Argento was knocked flat by a severe case of hepatitis and forced to work lying on his back. Bava died in 1980, shortly before the film's release.
• The flooded ballroom that swallows Rose was a two-level set built at Rome's De Paolis studios: a room sunk in a water tank with the rotting cellar constructed above it. Actress Irene Miracle handled the long underwater takes herself, drawing on synchronized-swimming she'd done as a girl.
• It's the middle chapter of the Three Mothers trilogy, picking up the mythology from Suspiria and centering on Mater Tenebrarum, the cruelest of the sisters, hidden in Manhattan. Argento lifted the framework from Thomas De Quincey's 1845 prose work Suspiria de Profundis and its 'Three Ladies of Sorrow.'
• 20th Century Fox financed it, then a management shake-up at the studio left the film orphaned. The US theatrical release was shelved for years; American audiences didn't get it until a Key Video VHS drop in 1985, and Fox only gave it a token one-week New York theatrical run in 1986, after the tape was already out.
• Argento dropped Goblin and hired Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Keith Emerson for the score, wanting something more delicate than the wall of sound Goblin built for Suspiria. Instead of original cues, Emerson reworked Verdi, including the 'Va, pensiero' chorus from Nabucco, rescored in five-four time.
• The cast threads through Argento's world and beyond: Daria Nicolodi (his partner and Suspiria co-writer), Eleonora Giorgi, Leigh McCloskey, and genre royalty Alida Valli, who'd already appeared in Suspiria.

The building itself is the monster, not the witch inside it. Varelli's architecture is described as the body of the Mother, so every death by water, fire, or falling masonry reads as the house digesting its residents. The thin, almost incidental human characters aren't a writing failure so much as the point: people are furniture in a structure that was always going to outlive them.

Read it as a dream logic film rather than a mystery and the broken causality stops being a flaw. Characters die mid-investigation, clues lead nowhere, and the camera lingers on rooms long after the people leave. The trilogy's De Quincey source is about opium visions, and Inferno plays like one, prioritizing the feeling of being hunted by a space over any solvable plot.

Mater Tenebrarum hiding in plain sight as a minor character is the franchise's real trick. The youngest and cruelest Mother doesn't need a lair or a monologue; her power is that you've been looking at her the whole time and dismissed her. The film withholds the reveal so casually that the witch's contempt for her victims becomes the audience's experience too.

A woman in a crumbling New York apartment building stumbles onto an old book about three witch-sisters who quietly run the world from three cursed houses. She writes her brother, a music student in Rome; before he can answer, she vanishes into the dark of her own basement. He flies over to find her and walks straight into the same trap, peeling back a building that breathes, drowns, and devours its tenants one by one. There's barely a plot to hold onto, just architecture as predator and color as warning, all of it answering to the youngest, cruelest Mother: Mater Tenebrarum.
