PLOT
- Written by Mercero with Jose Luis Garci and broadcast on Television Espanola on December 13, 1972, the 35-minute film won the 1973 International Emmy Award for Fiction — still the only Spanish program ever to take one — plus the Golden Nymph at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
- TVE executives feared the trapped-man parable read as a swipe at the Franco regime and suspended its broadcast date; mounting praise from the Spanish press over Mercero's Monte-Carlo win and the prospect of lucrative foreign sales finally tipped the balance toward airing it — reportedly with one brief shot trimmed over a claim it showed ministry property.
- Star Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez, Spain's on-screen everyman and a famously physical comic actor, had just proven his dramatic range the year before in Mi querida senorita (1971) — exactly the kind of expressive, nearly wordless performance a film that strips dialogue down to a few desperate, useless pleas demanded.
- Core entrapment scenes were shot in Madrid's Plaza del Conde del Valle de Suchil in the Chamberi district; the climactic underground sequence was filmed in the galleries of the Aldeadavila dam, with additional exteriors near villages in Salamanca province such as Vitigudino and La Zarza de Pumareda.
- The ending hauls the booth into an underground warehouse stacked with other booths, each holding the decaying remains of a similar trapped man — one having strangled himself with the phone cord — while the company calmly installs a fresh booth back in the same city plaza.
- Aired to a reported 20 million Spaniards, the film unsettled the country so badly that it spawned lasting legend — tales of panicked phone calls and viewers wary of public booths — and TVE held off re-broadcasting it for years.
