PLOT
  • Producer-star Abel Salazar, who plays husband Jaime, ran the production through his own outfit Cinematografica ABSA on a 74-minute runtime. Salazar was an engine of Mexican gothic horror in this era, having also produced and starred in El Vampiro.
  • Director Rafael Baledon and co-writer Fernando Galiana keep only the name of La Llorona and throw out the legend's core. There are no children drowned in a river here. The folk weeping-mother is recast as a witch who bargained with the devil for immortality, slaughtered her way through a town, and was executed for it, turning a ghost story into a tale of inherited witchcraft and blood sacrifice.
  • Cinematographer Jose Ortiz Ramos shoots the whole thing in mist-shrouded chiaroscuro and cobwebbed studio sets, which is why critics keep pinning it as Mexico's answer to Mario Bava's Black Sunday from three years earlier. A misty shot of Selma near the very start lifts directly from Bava's film.
  • Composer Gustavo Cesar Carrion scores the picture with discordant musical stings that punctuate the gothic atmosphere.
  • The film opens cold with a stagecoach full of travelers butchered on a fog-bound road by Selma's scarred, deformed henchman Juan, before the plot has even introduced its leads. Selma herself is staged for maximum dread: completely black, sightless eyes and three large dogs straining on leashes, a look modeled directly on Black Sunday.
  • The reanimation hinges on a literal object: the preserved corpse of the witch Marina, Selma's mother, with a dagger driven through the heart. The curse is carried forward through the bloodline until the possessed Amelia can draw the blade out and revive the body at midnight on her 25th birthday.
