PLOT
- Adapted from 'Yume no Ginga' by Kyusaku Yumeno, the pen name of Sugiyama Yasumichi, an early Showa-era writer of warped detective and fantasy fiction best known for the 1935 novel 'Dogra Magra.' Yumeno died of a cerebral hemorrhage in March 1936, collapsing while talking with a visitor at his home; Ishii adapted the 1930s story but reset it in a remote, hard-to-place mid-century Japanese countryside, sources placing it anywhere from prewar to the late 1950s.
- Tadanobu Asano plays the suspected serial-killer driver Tatsuo Niitaka opposite Rena Komine as Tomiko, in a reputation-building role years before his international breakout as Kakihara in Takashi Miike's 2001 'Ichi the Killer.' It is one of the films that built his name for cold, magnetic ambiguity.
- Shot in black and white by cinematographer Norimichi Kasamatsu, the film's monochrome is widely praised as gorgeously rendered and ultra-stark, trading Ishii's earlier handheld punk energy for composed, expressionist framing, including an introduction that buries Niitaka's face in a burst of blinding light.
- Music is by Hiroyuki Onogawa and the film was edited by Kan Suzuki. It was produced and sold internationally by KSS, ran 90 minutes, and opened in Japan on February 15, 1997.
- The film marks Ishii's mid-1990s pivot. After making his name on punk and cyberpunk chaos like 'Burst City' and 'Crazy Thunder Road,' he turned to quieter, female-led psychodrama, and 'Labyrinth of Dreams' sits alongside 'Angel Dust' (1994) and 'August in the Water' in a hypnotic 1990s run built around women rather than men.
- It traveled the international festival circuit, screening in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival and in the Panorama section of the 1997 Berlinale.
