Lake Mungo

• Made for roughly $1.7 million, financed first through private investors and then topped up by Screen Australia — and it grossed under $30,000 in theaters (about A$29,850), a near-total commercial failure that didn't stop it becoming one of the most respected horror films of its era.
• Writer-director Joel Anderson handed his cast a detailed treatment with no written dialogue. The actors improvised every interview scene, and Anderson himself played the unseen, uncredited interviewer asking the questions off-camera — part of why the talking-head footage reads as genuine documentary.
• Anderson cast deliberately low-profile, unfamiliar actors to protect the documentary illusion, and cinematographer John Brawley shot across a huge range of film and video formats (35mm down to VHS) over roughly five weeks so the mixed-media texture would feel like a real family's archive.

The film argues grief is a haunting whether or not a ghost exists. Mathew fakes the early apparitions to give his parents something to look at, and the joke is that the fakery works — it processes the loss. By the time real footage of Alice surfaces, the family has already moved through the mourning the hoax forced on them. The literal ghost is almost beside the point; the point is that you'll manufacture a presence rather than accept an absence.

Alice knew she was already dead before she drowned. The recovered cellphone clip at the dunes shows her meeting a bloated, corpse-like double of herself — the exact state her body would be found in — and her recurring drowning dreams and the psychic visit before the trip frame the whole film as a loop. She wasn't haunted after death; she was haunted by it in advance, watching her own end come for her.

The buried secrets are the real horror, not the apparitions. The hidden tape of Alice with the neighbors, the things she buried at the lake, the double life nobody knew — the family spends the film hunting a ghost while the genuinely disturbing revelation is that they never actually knew their daughter. The supernatural is a screen for the more ordinary terror that the people closest to you stay strangers.

Sixteen-year-old Alice Palmer drowns on a family day out, and the grieving Palmers start catching her in places she shouldn't be — backyard footage, a stranger's photographs, the corner of a frame. The film plays it straight as a TV doc: talking heads, archival tape, a parade of experts. Then it pulls the rug, exposes a hoax, and keeps digging anyway, into hidden affairs, buried secrets, and a phone video shot at the dunes that turns the whole grief into a death foretold. The scares aren't jump cuts. They're in the still frames you weren't meant to study.
