Lamb

• It's the feature debut of Valdimar Jóhannsson, who spent nearly two decades as a special-effects and technical-crew technician on big productions including Prometheus, Rogue One and Game of Thrones before directing his own film.
• Jóhannsson studied under Béla Tarr at Tarr's film.factory school in Sarajevo, and Tarr is credited as an executive producer on the film.
• Co-writer Sjón is one of Iceland's best-known poets and novelists and a longtime Björk collaborator, having co-written the Oscar-nominated 'I've Seen It All' from Dancer in the Dark.
• The lamb-child Ada was built from a mix of real lambs (four of them), about ten child actors, puppeteers and digital head replacement rather than a single creature effect; Noomi Rapace has said working with the live animals and babies kept her performance grounded.
• Jóhannsson's grandparents were sheep farmers and he spent much of his childhood near their farm; Rapace performed actual live lamb births on camera for the film's barn sequences.
• It won the Prize of Originality in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and, distributed by A24, became the highest-grossing Icelandic film ever released in the United States.

Ada is less a monster than a test, and the film is a fable about theft dressed as parenthood. María and Ingvar don't find Ada so much as take her, even killing the ewe that keeps bleating for her offspring. The ram-man who arrives in the final scene isn't random vengeance; he's the natural order arriving to repossess what the couple stole, balancing a debt that was always going to come due.

The whole film is María's bargain with grief. The early scenes hint the couple lost a child of their own, and Ada arrives as a replacement that lets María skip past mourning straight into motherhood again. Read that way, the ending is the universe refusing to let a parent cheat death twice, taking Ingvar to restore the loss María tried to paper over.

The structure deliberately withholds Ada's body for most of the runtime, framing her as ordinary through the parents' loving gaze. The horror isn't the hybrid; it's how easily the audience, like María and Ingvar, normalizes something deeply wrong because it fills an emotional hole. The film implicates the viewer's own willingness to look away from the unnatural when it comforts us.

Deep in a fog-soaked Icelandic valley, two grief-hollowed sheep farmers, María and Ingvar, pull something impossible from the birthing pen one winter morning: a lamb-headed child they name Ada and raise as their own. The land does not approve. As the couple build a fragile domestic happiness around their stolen blessing, Ingvar's deadbeat brother turns up to watch the strangeness, and the creature's true mother circles the property. Nature keeps its ledger, and it always collects. A patient, deadpan folk-horror parable about taking what was never offered.
