PLOT
  • The whole thing was built for roughly a $2 million budget, with the visual-effects allotment a tight $150,000 spread across nearly 300 shots, leaving the team about $500 per effect.
  • It shot at Docklands Studios in Melbourne, in a working TV broadcast soundstage at the Gravity Media Production Centre (Stage 5), which already had audience seating, rigging and a lit floor, saving the production from building a talk-show set from scratch. The whole shoot took just twenty days.
  • It marked character actor David Dastmalchian's first lead role after years of supporting work; the Cairnes brothers offered it to him without an audition, and when the offer came through he assumed they'd made a mistake.
  • The Cairnes brothers modeled Delroy on Australian late-night host Don Lane, and the on-air collision with the skeptic draws on a real moment when Lane clashed with debunker James Randi over Uri Geller's spoon-bending and stormed off his own stage.
  • After a clean SXSW premiere, the theatrical cut drew a boycott push on Letterboxd when fans spotted three AI-generated interstitial cards; the directors confirmed they experimented with AI for those brief 'we'll be right back' slides and edited them further.
  • On the IFC Films release it scored the distributor's biggest-ever opening weekend at the time, around $2.8 million, including a fittingly Satanic $666,666 Sunday gross.
