Les Diaboliques

• Clouzot beat Hitchcock to the rights by a matter of hours. After The Wages of Fear he optioned Boileau and Narcejac's 1952 novel Celle qui n'etait plus (She Who Was No More), blocking Hitchcock, who then snapped up the same duo's next book, D'entre les morts, and turned it into Vertigo. The same authors' DNA runs through both films.
• The film helped push Hitchcock toward Psycho. Robert Bloch, who wrote the Psycho novel, called Diaboliques his favorite horror film of all time and 'the epitome of what the horror film should be,' and Hitchcock made Psycho partly to top his French rival's mid-story shocks and bathroom horror.
• Clouzot was a tyrant who demanded literal rot. His realist creed had the cast actually eat the spoiled fish served in the school dining-hall scene rather than fake it, part of a cruel, dictatorial reputation on set, the opposite of Hitchcock's more collaborative style.
• Vera Clouzot, the director's wife, played Christina, the woman with the failing heart who dies of cardiac shock in the film. She died of a real heart attack in 1960 at age 46, five years after the film's release, eerily echoing her character.
• The ending sold the film through a word-of-mouth gag: a closing title card begged audiences not to spoil the twist, reading roughly 'Don't be devils. Don't ruin the interest your friends could take in this movie.' Clouzot also barred latecomers from theaters once the film started, a tactic Hitchcock later made famous with Psycho.
• It cleaned up on prestige: the Prix Louis-Delluc, the New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Foreign Film, and a Special Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Foreign Film.

The murder plot is the seduction, not the killing. The film keeps framing the wife and mistress as the real couple, two women drawn together by the same abuser. Read that way, the conspiracy is courtship and the husband's faked-then-real resurrection is the patriarchy refusing to stay dead, punishing the women the instant they try to live without him.

The rotten-fish dinner is the whole film in miniature. Forcing the sick wife to 'Swallow!' food that nauseates her is the same dynamic as the entire plot: she is made to ingest something that's killing her and told it's normal. The drowning, the cleaned suit, the boy's lie, all of it is more rot she's ordered to keep swallowing until her heart gives out.

Christina is gaslit to death by design, and the open eyes in the bathtub are the cruelty's signature. The conspirators bank on her weak heart from the start, staging a haunting calibrated to one specific vulnerable organ. The horror isn't a ghost, it's that someone mapped her body's breaking point and walked her to it on purpose.

At a moldering provincial boys' school, a sadistic headmaster torments both his frail wife, who owns the place, and his hard-edged mistress. The two women, bonded by shared bruises, drug the man and drown him in a bathtub, then dump the body in the school's stagnant pool to fake an accident. But when the pool is drained, there's no corpse. His suit comes back from the cleaners. A boy claims he was just punished by the dead man. As the wife's weak heart hammers toward collapse, the question curdles: who's really being murdered here?
