Let's Scare Jessica to Death

• Shot in 26 days in the fall of 1970 around Old Saybrook, Connecticut, on a budget of $250,000. The film was produced independently (as The Jessica Company) with no distributor attached, and was finished before Paramount bought it in early 1971.
• The title was a marketing invention. Throughout production it was simply called 'Jessica'; Paramount executive Frank Yablans deemed that uncommercial, renamed it, then sold the picture hard as a vampire film it isn't really, even staging a horse-drawn hearse outside the New York premiere.
• The drowned-girl-in-the-water effect was rigged the morning of the shoot in a motel swimming pool. Director John D. Hancock and producer Charles Moss used a dummy weighted with concrete blocks and worked with a simple pulley system, rather than a real lake.
• Walter Sear, who helped Robert Moog develop the Moog synthesizer, supplied the menacing electronic drones over Orville Stoeber's piano-and-guitar score, making it one of the earliest horror films to lean on synth dread.
• Director John D. Hancock landed the job off the strength of his AFI-funded short 'Sticky My Fingers... Fleet My Feet,' which earned a 1971 Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short. Jessica was his feature debut.
• Hancock's reputation got him hired to direct Jaws 2, but he was removed less than a month into shooting after clashing with the studio over his darker, bleaker vision; Jeannot Szwarc replaced him.

The whole farmhouse haunting is Jessica's relapse, not the supernatural. The voiceover whispers ('Jessica, why have you come here?') are framed as her own internal narration, and the film opens and closes with her alone and broken in the rowboat. Every 'vampire' detail can be read as a mind reassembling its own breakdown out of the day's stray images.

Emily is a literal vampire and the village is her quietly converted flock, the bandaged necks on every old man being the tell. Under this read Jessica is the only one sane enough to see it, and her institutional history is exactly why no one believes her, the perfect prey.

It works as a horror story about a woman gaslit on every side. The husband, the friend, the town, and her own diagnosed past all give the men around her permission to dismiss what she perceives, so the real monster is a world that has pre-decided a recovering woman can't be trusted about her own reality.

Fresh out of a mental institution, Jessica retreats to a Connecticut farmhouse with her husband and a friend, hauling a fragile new calm with her. Then a squatter named Emily is already living there, the townsfolk are old men with bandaged necks, and a drowned girl keeps surfacing at the edge of the cove. As whispers crowd Jessica's skull, the film refuses to tell her or us whether the house holds a vampire, a ghost, or a relapse wearing the shape of one. The dread never resolves. That's the point.
