Let the Right One In

• The film ran on roughly 29 million kronor (about $4.5 million) and grossed around $11.2 million worldwide, with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shooting it in Super35 with spherical lenses for a clean 2.35:1 frame that keeps the snow geometric and the suburb claustrophobic.
• Lina Leandersson plays Eli on screen, but every line of Eli's dialogue is dubbed by Elif Ceylan, an older actress. Alfredson found Leandersson's voice too high in pitch and wanted Eli to read as more ancient and androgynous, so the production overdubbed it late in the process and the crew took a vote on the replacement.
• A flashback explaining Eli's origin and castration was scripted but abandoned: the close-up knife work couldn't be faked with rubber or effects, so it would have required killing a real animal. When a butcher showed up at the studio with a live pig, Alfredson looked at it and refused, saying he wouldn't be able to sleep if they killed it.
• Van Hoytema's work won Best Cinematography at the Guldbagge Awards (the film took four Guldbagges total, including Best Director for Alfredson) plus the Kodak Nordic Vision Award for 2008.
• Magnolia/Magnet's first US DVD and Blu-ray shipped with newly dumbed-down 'dub-title' subtitles that stripped the dark humor and nuance of the theatrical track. Fans, tipped off by blogger RobG at Icons of Fright, revolted; Magnet restored the theatrical subtitles on later pressings but refused to swap the bad discs already sold.

Eli isn't grooming a friend, she's recruiting a replacement. The 'father,' Håkan, is read by many fans as a grown-up Oskar, decades down the line: a former boy-companion aged into a defeated blood-fetcher. The film's final image of Oskar happily ferrying Eli in a train trunk plays as the first day of that same doomed contract.

The pool finale is Oskar's monsters trading places. Eli answers his fantasy of revenge by literally enacting the violence he only rehearsed with a knife, which frames their bond less as rescue than as Oskar outsourcing his rage to a predator who will eventually own him.

Eli's flickered, never-quite-shown body and the suppressed castration backstory recode the romance as a study of an ungendered, ageless being performing girlhood to survive, making Oskar's tenderness toward 'her' an embrace of something with no fixed sex at all.

Blackeberg, a frostbitten Stockholm suburb, 1982. Oskar is twelve, bullied bloodless, and quietly rehearsing revenge with a hunting knife in the snow. Next door moves Eli, a pale child who only appears after dark and smells faintly of something gone wrong. As bodies drain in the housing blocks and Eli's weary "father" Håkan botches his blood errands, the two outsiders forge a courtship built on Morse-code wall taps and unspoken bargains. Tomas Alfredson keeps the vampirism muffled under fluorescent dread, letting tenderness and predation share the same small body.
