Long Weekend

• Everett De Roche banged out the screenplay in ten days, his first feature script after years writing for Australian TV. He showed it to Colin Eggleston, who'd worked alongside him at Crawford Productions, and Eggleston signed on to direct.
• Shot in March-April 1977 near Bega in south-east New South Wales and on Phillip Island, Victoria, on a budget reported at roughly AU$425,000, funded through Film Victoria and the Australian Film Commission.
• The dead dugong that keeps inching toward the campsite hides a behind-the-scenes joke: the swimming sea creature was producer Richard Brennan himself, performing the animal in a marine-mammal water-rig costume. It's a true creator cameo buried in a horror film.
• The film flopped at home, held back from Australian theatres until 1979, but cleaned up overseas. John Hargreaves won Best Actor at the 1978 Sitges horror festival, and at the 1979 Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival it shared the Antenne 2 award in a tie with Philip Kaufman's Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
• Producer Richard Brennan claimed four foreign distributors bought the rights on the spot at Cannes 1978, making it the most commercially successful Australian title at that year's festival despite the domestic dud.
• De Roche wrote the 2008 remake himself, keeping nearly every original plot beat intact. Retitled Nature's Grave for U.S. video, it was directed by Jamie Blanks and starred Jim Caviezel and Claudia Karvan.

The dugong is the whole film in one rotting body. It's a female mourning a lost calf, and its dying cries bleed into the noises that torment Marcia, who is grieving a terminated pregnancy. Nature isn't punishing pollution so much as mirroring a marriage that already killed something it should have protected. The couple's real crime is on the inside; the bush just makes it visible.

There is no supernatural revenge at all, only consequence. Every death traces back to a careless act the couple committed, and the eagle that spooks the truck driver in the finale is just an animal doing what animals do near a man who has spent the weekend attacking them. The horror is that indifference, not malevolence, is enough to erase you.

The land reads the marriage as the infection. Peter and Marcia bring rot wherever they stop, and the wilderness closes around them the way a body walls off a wound. They never find the main road again because, in the film's logic, they were never meant to function anywhere; the bush simply quarantines two people who poison whatever they touch.

A bickering suburban couple drags their failing marriage and a cooler full of beer to a remote stretch of Australian coast, treating the bush like a dumpster they're allowed to ruin. Peter torches scrub with a flicked cigarette, runs down a kangaroo, smashes an eagle's egg, and shoots a dugong he mistakes for a shark. Marcia, grieving an aborted pregnancy, just wants out. The land keeps the receipt. No monster, no killer in the trees, no explanation offered. Only the slow, patient arithmetic of a place that has decided two trespassers won't be leaving.
