Man Bites Dog

• Shot in stark black-and-white on 16mm by film students out of Brussels' INSAS school, the production stretched across about two and a half years because the money kept running dry. The crew shot more whenever free film stock or a little cash turned up. The budget is most reliably cited at around one million Belgian francs, roughly $33,000.
• The three directors also star, using their own first names: Benoît Poelvoorde plays the killer Ben, Rémy Belvaux plays the on-screen director Rémy, and André Bonzel works the camera as André — blurring the line between the fake crew and the real one.
• Poelvoorde's actual relatives play Ben's family: Jacqueline Poelvoorde-Pappaert as his mother, Nelly Pappaert as his grandmother, and Hector Pappaert as his grandfather, which is a large part of why the domestic scenes feel uncomfortably real.

• The English title flips the old newsroom maxim 'dog bites man is not news, man bites dog is' — the French title, C'est arrivé près de chez vous, translates to 'It Happened in Your Neighborhood.'

The film is a trap built for the viewer, not just the crew. Ben's monologues are charming and quotable, which is the point — the movie waits until you're laughing along, then makes you watch the apartment assault with the same detachment the crew adopted, indicting the audience's appetite for charismatic killers.

The crew's slide from observers to participants tracks the economics of nonfiction filmmaking itself. The moment Ben starts paying their bills, objectivity is gone; every dead postman is also a funded shooting day. The film reads as a thesis on how documentary money compromises the documentarian.

The abrupt, total ending — every diegetic filmmaker dead — is the only honest stop. Because the footage IS the film, the camera can't outlive the crew. The blackout argues that complicity has no clean exit: once you hold the victim, the story can only end when it ends you.

A documentary crew shadows Ben, a chatty Belgian serial killer who pontificates on architecture, poetry, and the correct way to weight a corpse for sinking, all while strangling postmen and robbing pensioners on camera. What starts as detached observation curdles fast: the filmmakers take his cash, hold his victims, and finally pick up weapons themselves. The lens stops being a witness and becomes an accomplice. By the time rival killers come hunting, there is nobody left behind the camera clean enough to flinch.
