Mandy

• Made on roughly a $6 million budget, it grossed only about $1.8 million worldwide in theaters before becoming a genuine cult hit on VOD - the producers actually expected it to make next to nothing theatrically and earn back its money on home video instead.
• The score is one of the last works composer Johann Johannsson finished before his death on February 9, 2018, at age 48; the film carries a dedication to him in the end credits.
• The notorious 'Cheddar Goblin' mac-and-cheese commercial that plays mid-film was directed by Casper Kelly, the same mind behind the Adult Swim viral nightmare 'Too Many Cooks.'
• Red's hand-forged axe - nicknamed 'The Beast' - was designed off the stylized 'F' in the logo of Swiss extreme-metal pioneers Celtic Frost, sketched out by artist Jeffrey Halliday.
• Nicolas Cage broke his leg on a different shoot before filming, which cost the Belgium-based production its original cinematographer; replacement DP Benjamin Loeb joined only about two weeks before principal photography began.
• The film fakes its degraded, blood-and-neon early-'80s look by pairing Arri Alexa digital capture with Panavision Primo anamorphic lenses.

The whole second half plays as a grief hallucination rather than literal events. Red loses Mandy, immediately downs a bottle of vodka, and the revenge spree gets steadily more impossible (the Cheddar Goblin ad, the chemist's tiger, the cosmic LSD visions). Read that way, the Black Skulls and the demon-tinged geography are a shattered man's mind dressing up his rampage as myth.

The Black Skulls are a dark mirror of Red himself. They're explicitly former drug couriers wrecked by a bad batch of LSD into creatures who only know pain. Red ends the film snorting cocaine, tripping on acid, and grinning through gore he can't feel anymore. The cult didn't just kill Mandy; the chase turns Red into the same kind of pain-addicted thing it sends after him.

Jeremiah Sand is the film's real horror, not the bikers. A failed musician convinced of his own divinity, he weaponizes a cult to take what flattery can't earn. Mandy's crime is laughing at his music and his nakedness, puncturing the god-fantasy, and the entire massacre flows from one fragile ego that can't survive being seen as ordinary.

1983, the Shadow Mountains. Logger Red Miller and his wife Mandy live quiet at the edge of the woods until a third-rate folk-rock cult leader, Jeremiah Sand, decides he wants her. His Children of the New Dawn summon a pack of biker-demons, the Black Skulls, and what follows breaks Red open. The back half is a fever of forged weapons, chainsaw duels, and tainted-acid mayhem as a grief-wrecked man drinks, snorts, and bleeds his way up the mountain toward the people who burned his whole world down.
