• Shot for roughly $350,000 and grossed around $4.5 million. The crew filmed guerrilla-style over a 26-day schedule entirely on New York locations, frequently without permits, bolting before police arrived.
• Joe Spinell didn't just star as Frank Zito; he created the story, co-wrote the screenplay with C.A. Rosenberg, and poured his own salary from Cruising into the seed money that kept the production alive.
• Tom Savini handled effects with almost no budget and played the shotgun victim himself in the windshield kill. He fired both barrels of magnum shot through the windshield to detonate a cast of his own head packed with fake gore, got knocked backward off the car by the recoil, then immediately threw the gun into a waiting car that sped off before cops could respond to the gunfire.
• Caroline Munro was cast as a condition of the money. British producer Judd Hamilton put in roughly $200,000 to finish the film on the requirement that his then-wife play the female lead, Anna D'Antoni.
• The film skipped the ratings board and went out unrated. An X would have killed its theatrical run, so releasing it without a rating let it sidestep theater owners who refused X-rated product.
• Gene Siskel walked out of a screening after 30 minutes and used Sneak Previews to urge viewers to boycott it, singling out the Times Square video kiosks that looped its gore. In the UK it was refused a cinema certificate in 1981, landed on the video nasty list, was banned again on video in 1998, released with 58 seconds of cuts in 2002, and finally passed uncut by the BBFC in 2022.

The mannequins aren't trophies, they're a family. Frank scalps women and nails the hair to store dummies because he's literally rebuilding the mother who abused and abandoned him, freezing her in a form that can't walk out the door. The kills are less about lust than about control over the one woman who left first.

The Anna romance is a hallucination Frank can't sustain. His relationship with the photographer plays as the one stretch where he might pass as normal, but the warmth is filtered through his delusion, and the film's final apartment sequence, with the mannequins coming apart and tearing at him, reads as his psyche collapsing rather than a literal event.

The camera implicates the viewer on purpose. Lustig keeps us locked in Frank's point of view through the stalking scenes, denying the usual final-girl distance, so the discomfort critics attacked is the actual argument: voyeurism is the engine of the slasher, and the movie refuses to pretend otherwise.

Frank Zito drifts through a rotting, neon-slicked New York, a soft-spoken wreck of a man who talks to the mannequins lined up in his squalid apartment. Each one wears the scalp of a woman he's stalked, butchered, and nailed in place to keep her from leaving him like his mother did. When a fashion photographer takes a real interest in him, Frank dares to imagine a way out of his own skull. It doesn't hold. The film never blinks, never moralizes, and never lets you off Frank's leash.
