Marebito

• Marebito was shot in just eight days on a budget of about $40,000, filmed on digital video in the gap between Takashi Shimizu's work on Ju-On: The Grudge and its American remake.
• The screenplay and source story were written by novelist Chiaki J. Konaka — the film is an original Japanese work, not adapted from any Western horror writer.
• Lead actor Shinya Tsukamoto, who plays Masuoka, is a filmmaker in his own right, best known for directing the cult cyberpunk film Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989).

Masuoka never actually finds F; she is a psychic manifestation of his own repressed trauma and guilt over his wife's death — which the film implies he may have caused himself — projected onto the darkness he seeks to document.

The 'fear' driving Masuoka's obsession is not just psychological — the film suggests the underground creatures and F herself represent something that literally feeds on human terror, making Masuoka's documentary quest an unwitting act of predation.

The entire third act takes place within a dissociative fugue state, where the underground civilization represents Masuoka's complete break from reality after his wife's death.

Freelance TV cameraman Masuoka becomes obsessed with capturing raw human fear on camera after filming a stranger's bizarre suicide in a Tokyo subway station. Chasing that same terror underground, he discovers a labyrinth beneath the city inhabited by pale, feral creatures — and a chained, mute young woman he calls F, who drinks blood to survive. He takes her home and starts feeding her, first with animals, then with something worse, as his grip on reality slips and the line between rescuer and captor collapses. Director Takashi Shimizu and screenwriter Chiaki Konaka blur documentary footage and hallucination until it's unclear whether Masuoka has found a monster in the dark or become one himself.
