Meet the Feebles

• Shot in Wellington, New Zealand on a budget of roughly NZ$750,000 — and what was planned as a quick shoot stretched to around six months because rigging and operating the puppets for every single scene was so labor-intensive.
• It started life as a TV series concept and only became a feature mid-stream, when interest from a Japanese film company prompted a hasty script expansion and rewrite.
• Jackson's future wife and Oscar-winning co-writer Fran Walsh co-wrote the screenplay and contributed song lyrics, including 'Robert's Serenade' with Danny Mulheron.
• Co-writer Danny Mulheron physically performed Heidi from inside a full-body hippo suit — which he said was 'rancid and absolutely stank... after one day.' The team built more than 90 puppets from scratch, including a 20-foot whale.
• Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger — who would go on to co-found Weta Workshop — got their start with Jackson building Feebles puppets in a rat-infested freight shed under designer Cameron Chittock.
• It went unreleased in the U.S. until February 1995, six years after its New Zealand debut, when indie distributor Greycat Films toured it through art houses — by which point Jackson had already made Heavenly Creatures. Ireland banned it outright, and the ban has reportedly never been lifted.

The Feebles Variety Hour is a purgatorial loop: the characters are trapped souls forced to repeat their sins nightly, and the opening-day massacre is an apocalyptic reset that simply restarts the cycle. The show's 'live audience' never visibly reacts because they're already dead.

Sebastian the fox is the actual villain, not a comic relief director. His desperate insistence that the show must go on, regardless of backstage carnage, reads as a deliberate orchestration — he's feeding the chaos to produce the most profitable spectacle possible, making him a proto-reality-television producer archetype. The epilogue backs it up: he turns the massacre into a best-seller called 'The Feeble Variety Massacre: One Man's Act of Heroism!' and starts shopping the film rights.

Heidi's final massacre isn't a breakdown but a liberation. Her entire identity has been constructed around being Bletch's performing girlfriend; the machine-gun spree is her destroying the stage, the cast, and the persona simultaneously. Even the where-are-they-now epilogue plays into it — she does her prison time and walks out under a brand-new identity at a supermarket checkout, finally free of the show for good.

Behind the curtain of the Feebles Variety Hour, the show's cast of puppets is rotting from the inside out. Heidi the hippo suspects her walrus lover Bletch is cheating — he is, and he's running a drug racket on the side. Wynyard, a junkie knife-throwing frog haunted by Vietnam, botches rehearsals. A fly journalist hunts for blackmail material. Sid the elephant gets slapped with a paternity suit by a chicken. A rat shoots porn in the basement. By the time the curtain rises on opening night, backstage betrayals have metastasized into a full-scale bloodbath, and Heidi's machine-gun rampage leaves the stage littered with felt and viscera. Jackson's puppet ensemble makes the Muppets look like a church picnic.
