Night of the Comet

• Director Thom Eberhardt has said the film was made for roughly $700,000; principal photography ran about six weeks in the summer of 1984, and the department-store scenes were shot overnight so the production didn't have to pay to close the store during business hours.
• The film's eerie red-tinted daylight scenes were achieved with a simple in-camera trick: cinematographer Arthur Albert shot those sequences through a red lens filter rather than any optical or dye-based effect.
• Catherine Mary Stewart already had name recognition from The Last Starfighter and from originating the role of Kayla Brady on Days of Our Lives when she won the role of Reggie; casting was down to the wire, and it reportedly surprised everyone involved when she and Kelli Maroney ended up cast together as the sisters.
• Kelli Maroney had already played a cheerleader on screen two years earlier in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) before returning to pom-poms as the shotgun-toting Samantha in this film.
• Special makeup effects were designed by David B. Miller, who worked out of a one-car garage on a shoestring budget; at the producers' request he used white contact lenses to give the disintegrating zombie-like survivors their milky, dead-eyed look.

The film's real apocalypse isn't the comet but consumer capitalism. The sisters already lived in a dead world—shopping malls, fast food, empty entertainment. The comet just made the emptiness visible. When they raid the department store, it's not looting; it's a natural extension of who they already were.

The scientists' underground bunker reads as a deliberate counterpoint to the girls' steel sheds. Both are metal enclosures that protect survivors, but the bunker preserves patriarchal control while the sheds preserve something messier and more alive. The film sides with the sheds.

The zombies aren't separate from the humans—they're what happens when people stop performing normalcy. The girls survive because they keep performing: doing hair, shopping, flirting on the radio. The zombies died because they had nothing left to pretend about.

A comet last seen when dinosaurs ruled the earth swings back around and turns most of humanity into red dust. Two Valley Girl sisters survive because they each spent the night sealed inside steel-lined sheds. What's left of Los Angeles belongs to them—malls, radio stations, empty freeways. But they're not alone. Armed looters, government scientists who need fresh blood, and mutating survivors who haven't quite finished dying all want a piece. The sisters grab weapons, sunglasses, and attitude. Survival turns out to be less about competence and more about refusing to stay dead.
