Night of the Creeps

• Fred Dekker's directorial debut, made on a budget of roughly $5 million through TriStar Pictures. Despite that budget, TriStar had so little confidence in the film that it dumped it into a limited release of around 70 theaters.
• The cast is loaded with tributes to horror directors: Chris Romero (George Romero), James Carpenter Hooper (John Carpenter + Tobe Hooper), Cynthia Cronenberg (David Cronenberg), Det. Ray Cameron (James Cameron), Det. Landis (John Landis), Sgt. Raimi (Sam Raimi), and janitor Mr. Miner (Steve Miner) — Dekker's love letter to the genre baked right into the character names.
• Dekker has said the line 'Thrill me' — Detective Cameron's catchphrase every time he answers the phone — was the very first thing he wrote for the script, with the rest of the movie built around it. Tom Atkins made the delivery his own on set and also ad-libbed nicknaming the two young leads 'Spanky' and 'Alfalfa.'
• The gooey alien slug creatures were built by a young effects crew that included Robert Kurtzman and Howard Berger — both of whom went on to co-found the legendary KNB EFX Group — with creature design credited to David B. Miller.
• The film has two different endings. The theatrical cut closes on a stray dog vomiting up a slug as a final gag; the ending Dekker originally shot (later restored as an alternate ending on home video) instead cuts to the alien spacecraft descending on the cemetery to search for more bodies. In both versions, Detective Cameron dies and the slugs escape from his skull.

Detective Cameron's 27-year obsession with the 1959 murders reads as suppressed survivor's guilt—he was on the scene as a cop the night the original axe-killer struck and the cryogenic incident occurred. His alcoholism, his immediate recognition of the reanimated corpse, and his refusal to let anyone else handle the case all point to a man trying to close a wound he helped create.

The alien slugs may not be parasites at all but a terraforming biological weapon, engineered to spread by hijacking host bodies and directing them toward population centers like colleges. The crash-landing in 1959 wasn't an accident—it was a deployment, and the sorority house represents exactly the kind of concentrated human host population the slugs were designed to exploit.

The film's deliberate genre-blending isn't tonal inconsistency but a structural joke about how horror actually works in the real world: alien invasion, zombie outbreak, and slasher killing aren't separate genres but overlapping symptoms of the same catastrophic event. Dekker stages them simultaneously to argue that genre categories are artificial and real horror would never arrive wearing just one mask.

In 1959, a canister tumbles out of an alien ship and a parasitic slug burrows into college kid Johnny's skull the same night an axe-wielding maniac is stalking a campus lovers' lane. Johnny's body ends up frozen solid in a university medical center cryo-chamber and forgotten. Twenty-seven years later, fraternity pledges Chris and J.C. try to steal a cadaver off campus for a hazing prank and accidentally thaw Johnny out instead — waking him up loaded with alien slugs that leap mouth-first into anyone nearby, turning frat boys into shuffling, fireproof host bodies. The infestation rips through Greek row while a boozy, guilt-ridden cop who worked the original 1959 case finally gets his answers. Fred Dekker's directorial debut crams alien invasion, zombie outbreak, and slasher-movie stalking into a college-comedy chassis, building to a flamethrower showdown at the same sorority house where it all started in '59.
