Noroi: The Curse

• Budget was around $2 million — a substantial sum for Japanese horror at the time — yet the film earned only about $7,400 at the global box office during its brief theatrical run, building its cult reputation later through home video and streaming rather than ticket sales.
• Director Koji Shiraishi co-wrote the screenplay with Naoyuki Yokota; before Noroi, Shiraishi had worked making low-budget pseudo-documentary paranormal videos for Japan's home-video market, the same format he expanded into a full feature here.

Kagutaba is never actually exorcised or contained. The final ritual fails because it was always going to fail — the entity's influence corrupts the very footage documenting it, meaning the audience watching the tape has, in a sense, already been exposed the same way everyone in the film was.

Keiko's death and Kobayashi's disappearance aren't separate tragedies. Keiko becomes possessed and sets herself alight the same night Hori attacks the household over the boy — read together, it plays like Kagutaba punishing the house for interrupting its plan for its new vessel, with Kobayashi's fate left deliberately open because the curse isn't finished with him.

Mitsuo Hori's tinfoil-hat rambling about 'ectoplasmic worms' isn't just movie-psychic color — it reads as his broken but sincere attempt to describe how Kagutaba actually operates. His death, stuffed into a duct days after the fire, plays like the curse silencing the one person who'd gotten closest to understanding it.

Paranormal investigator Masafumi Kobayashi vanishes after a fire guts his house during production of his own documentary, The Curse — his wife Keiko is later found dead in the wreckage. What survives is the tape: a patchwork assembly of hidden-camera footage, a child TV psychic whose powers turn out to be all too real, a village abandoned to build a dam, and a demon called Kagutaba that a Nagano hamlet once bound through ritual and then let loose. Kobayashi's investigation runs through actress Marika Matsumoto's escalating possession, a paranoid researcher named Mitsuo Hori who insists "ectoplasmic worms" are behind it all, and a ritual performed too late to undo what was started decades earlier. The film ends without answers — a postscript confirms Kobayashi is still missing, and the curse has already moved on to a new host.
