Knock's Renfield-like devotion to Orlok mirrors Thomas's employer-broker relationship, suggesting Orlok's true power operates through transactional capitalism — property acquisition, contracts, and debt — rather than traditional vampire hypnotism. The plague follows the paperwork, not the fangs.

Von Franz's occult knowledge and willingness to let Ellen martyr herself positions him as either the film's only true believer or its most dangerous fool. His 'science' looks indistinguishable from superstition, and Eggers deliberately leaves whether his ritual actually works or whether Ellen's death simply coincides with dawn permanently ambiguous.

Ellen Hutter's lonely childhood prayers summon something ancient from the Carpathian darkness. Years later, her husband Thomas travels to Transylvania to broker a real estate deal with Count Orlok — a decrepit nobleman who feeds on the living and casts plague across Wisborg like a burial shroud. Orlok wants the land. He also wants Ellen, and he won't stop consuming until she submits or the cock crows third. Eggers drags Stoker's Dracula back through the muck of folklore, where Nosferatu isn't a seductive aristocrat but a walking corpse driven by appetite and ancient contract. Ellen's the only one who understands the transaction. She's also the payment.
