One Cut of the Dead

• Made for just ¥3 million (about $25,000), the film grossed roughly ¥3.12 billion in Japan alone and topped $30 million worldwide — about 1,000 times its original budget, per The Hollywood Reporter.
• The 37-minute opening shot plays as one unbroken take with zero cuts, but it wasn't easy to land: the cast and crew needed six full attempts, shot over eight days, before getting the take that made the final film.
• The film premiered on a modest six-day run at an 84-seat art-house theater in Tokyo (backed by Enbu Seminar, the acting/directing school behind the production). Word of mouth, boosted by buzz out of Italy's Udine Far East Film Festival, built enough demand that distributor Asmik Ace picked it up for wide release, eventually playing on 200-plus screens.
• Much of the cast came out of Enbu Seminar itself. Lead actress Yuzuki Akiyama, who plays Chinatsu, had already worked with director Shinichiro Ueda on his 2011 short film Dreaming Novelist.
• The whole thing was shot at an abandoned water filtration plant in Mito, Ibaraki, over eight days in June 2017.
• The film's success spawned official remakes abroad: a French-language version, Final Cut, directed by Michel Hazanavicius, opened the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and a Vietnamese remake, Blood Moon Rite 8, followed.

The film operates as an allegory for Japanese working culture: every cast and crew member is underpaid, under-supported, and expected to improvise around failures while maintaining the appearance of seamless competence. The zombies are just the final insult in a system already designed to consume people.

The director-character Higurashi's on-set meltdown reads like a wink at the scrappy, resource-starved way Ueda and the Enbu Seminar cast actually made this movie on a shoestring workshop budget, not a studio production. The film's structure — showing the finished broadcast, then the broadcast layer, then the raw production nightmare underneath — argues that all 'content' is a lie built on human wreckage, and the only honest version is the last one.

The repeated motif of 'keep rolling' regardless of injury, error, or panic functions as a commentary on found-footage horror itself: the genre's central conceit demands that someone always chooses the camera over survival, and One Cut exposes that choice as absurd by showing the panicked human calculus behind it.
