Paperhouse

• Bernard Rose's feature debut, adapted from Catherine Storr's 1958 novel 'Marianne Dreams' — which had previously been adapted as the six-part 1972 ITV children's serial 'Escape Into Night' (not a BBC series, and not titled 'The Haunting of Marianne').
• Vestron Pictures financed the film on the condition it avoid an R-rating; it landed a PG-13 in the US. Despite strong reviews (Roger Ebert gave it four stars and it holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes), it flopped commercially, grossing just $241,278 worldwide against a roughly $1.6-2 million budget.
• Anna was played by Charlotte Burke, chosen from about 1,500 girls who auditioned. Paperhouse is her only screen credit — she never acted again, saying she'd made a film she was proud of and didn't want to follow it with anything else.
• The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 1988, but didn't open in US theaters until February 17, 1989, and UK audiences had to wait until June 2, 1989 — nearly nine months after its festival debut.
• In adapting the novel, Rose swapped the book's abstract threat (menacing phallic-shaped stones) for a man with a hammer, feeling it was psychologically equivalent while making the film 'heavier and more adult.'

The paperhouse functions as Anna's proto-art therapy: each dream visit is a working-through of her unconscious relationship with her absent, volatile father. The blinded man on the hill isn't supernatural but a child's pre-verbal representation of paternal rage, given form only because Anna lacks the emotional vocabulary to process it directly.

Anna's friend Marc — a real hospital patient dying of muscular dystrophy whom she's never actually met — becomes her guide because he represents the version of herself she's trying to reach — another bedridden child who understands the landscape's logic. His deterioration mirrors her own; rescuing him is rescuing the part of herself still willing to fight.

The film reads as a pre-pubescent girl's first encounter with the idea that creation carries consequence. Every stroke of the pencil alters the dream, but never cleanly — additions distort, intentions curdle. Rose stages artistic agency as simultaneously empowering and terrifying, a child discovering that control and responsibility arrive in the same package.

Eleven-year-old Anna sketches a crude house from her sickbed, then adds a boy at the window and a menacing father figure on the hill outside. Each time she drops into fever-sleep, she wakes inside the drawing — and every addition bleeds into the dreamscape. After she sketches her real father in anger, his likeness returns as a blinded, furious figure stalking the paper corridors with a hammer. Anna's only weapon is the pencil. Rose's debut claws at the membrane between juvenile nightmare and genuine psychosis, asking whether a child can draw her own salvation or merely illustrate her collapse.
