Nick Laemle's job at Toxico, a chemical company, suggests the cannibalism is an extension of corporate America's appetite rather than an aberration from it. The Laemles aren't monsters hiding in suburbia; they're suburbia functioning exactly as designed. The 1950s WASP ideal is the monster, and the film is simply honest about what gets ground up to maintain it.

The film can be read as a secret prequel to the 1970s conspiracy thriller cycle. Michael's childhood investigation into institutional cover-ups and contaminated food supplies mirrors the paranoid investigative structures of films like The Parallax View, only here the paranoid is ten years old and the conspiracy is dinner.
