Perfect Blue

• Darren Aronofsky bought the American remake rights to Perfect Blue and lifted its bathtub-scream shot almost frame-for-frame for Requiem for a Dream (2000). Aronofsky has claimed Satoshi Kon gave his blessing as an 'homage'; Kon said publicly he was never asked and was stunned when he saw the finished scene.
• The film started life as a planned live-action feature. After the 1995 Kobe earthquake damaged the production company and gutted the budget (from a planned 100 million yen down to roughly 90 million), it was downgraded to a direct-to-video OVA before being pushed back up to a theatrical release just before completion.
• Kon, a former manga artist, storyboarded the film's disorienting graphic match cuts himself — editing scenes together via matching visual elements so that Mima's TV-drama scenes, her hallucinations, and her real life bleed into one another without warning.
• Perfect Blue had its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal on August 5, 1997, where it won Best Asian Film (tied with The Legend of Drunken Master) — not an animation-specific prize, since it was competing against live-action genre films.
• Madhouse producer Masao Maruyama, impressed by Kon's work on the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA, approached him in 1994 to direct — making Perfect Blue Kon's feature directorial debut.
• The film is based on Yoshikazu Takeuchi's 1991 novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis, but Kon significantly restructured the story, adding the show-within-the-film layer that blurs Mima's TV role with her real breakdown.

Mima is already dead by the film's climax, and the final scene in her hospital room is her constructing a comforting afterlife where she survived and 'won.' The doppelgänger's final wave goodbye supports this: the original Mima is gone, and the construct continues autonomously.

The real killer is never the stalker Me-Mania acting alone — it's Rumi, Mima's own manager, who has fused with the 'idol' persona in her own mind and believes she IS the real Mima. Read Rumi as the embodiment of everyone who felt Mima betrayed her wholesome image: she murders the photographer and screenwriter who 'corrupted' Mima, manipulates Me-Mania into attacking Mima directly, then kills Me-Mania himself once he fails. It's not a fan's revenge fantasy — it's the industry around Mima enacting it in her name.

The entire film after Mima's first scripted assault scene in 'Double Bind' is the show itself. The camera pulls back to reveal layers of performance, and the real Mima is an actress playing an actress playing an idol. The final shot of her in the car mirror saying 'No, I'm the real thing' is the character breaking the fourth wall of the show-within-the-film, not Mima reclaiming her sanity.
