Phantasm

• Don Coscarelli was 24 when Phantasm came out, and he'd already directed two prior features -- 'Jim, the World's Greatest' (1975) and 'Kenny & Company' (1976) -- before shooting Phantasm on a budget around $300,000, mostly on weekends over about a year, bankrolled by his father and local investors.
• The iconic silver Sentinel Sphere was built by veteran Hollywood effects craftsman Willard "Will" Green for a little over $1,100. Green was elderly and died before the film was released, so he never saw the finished movie.
• Angus Scrimm was born Lawrence Rory Guy and stood about 6'4", playing it up with undersized suits and platform shoes as the Tall Man. Coscarelli had already directed him -- under his real name -- in 'Jim, the World's Greatest' four years earlier. Scrimm's day job was writing liner notes for Capitol/Angel Records, and he actually won a Grammy (credited as Rory Guy) for Best Album Notes, Classical, in 1975.
• Phantasm was banned in Iceland from 1991 until 2017, and it landed on the UK's DPP list of 72 'video nasties' during the early-1980s obscenity panic -- though it was never among the titles actually prosecuted.
• The mortuary's exterior was shot at the real Dunsmuir Mansion in Oakland, California, while Jody's muscle car was a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda with a 340 V8 (not a Hemi, as sometimes claimed) that the production repainted black for the shoot.

Mike is the dreamer, and the entire film is his subconscious processing Jody's death in a car accident. The opening shots establish Mike watching a funeral through a telescope; the final scene confirms Jody is gone and the Tall Man seizes Mike in a bedroom. Everything between is a child's mind refusing to accept loss, reimagining death as an invasion plot he can fight rather than endure.

The Tall Man is a cosmic undertaker harvesting human bodies as raw material for a dimensional workforce. The dwarfs are processed humans, compressed and repurposed for labor on a dying world. The morgue is a processing plant, the tuning-fork gate is a freight elevator, and Mike has stumbled into an industrial operation that treats Earth as a resource colony.

Reggie the ice cream man is the anchor of reality throughout the film, the only character who never experiences the dimension-shift or the Tall Man's psychic manipulation directly. He functions as Mike's reality-check, and his survival in the sequels suggests he may be the one character the Tall Man cannot reach or corrupt.

Mike's a kid with a telescope and a grudge against curiosity. He spies on the mortuary at the end of town and watches a funeral where a dead man's coffin gets lifted into the back of a hearse by a figure who shouldn't have that kind of strength. The Tall Man runs the place, and he's not exactly running it alone. There are dwarf slaves in hooded robes, a flying silver sphere that drills into skulls and pumps out blood, and a dimension-shift gate disguised as a tuning fork. Mike drags his older brother Jody and their friend Reggie the ice cream man into a nightmare that won't stay linear long enough to explain itself. Something is wrong with the funeral home. Something is wrong with everything.
