TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Saul Bass, the legendary graphic designer behind the title sequences for Vertigo, Psycho, and The Man with the Golden Arm, directed only one feature film in his entire career: this one.
  • The ants on screen are real, not miniatures or animation — the extreme macro photography was shot by Ken Middleham, the same insect cinematographer whose work on The Hellstrom Chronicle (1971) won an Academy Award.
  • Paramount cut nearly four minutes of psychedelic ending footage Bass had shot for the finale. The lost sequence wasn't rediscovered until a faded print turned up in the Academy Film Archive in 2012 and finally screened publicly that June.
  • Despite being one of the most celebrated poster and title designers in Hollywood history, Bass was shut out of his own film's marketing entirely — Paramount slapped on a lurid one-sheet of an ant crawling out of a bloody hand that he had no hand in creating.
  • The film flopped hard on its 1974 release and was pulled from theaters quickly, effectively ending Bass's directing career before a second feature ever got made.
  • Screenwriter Mayo Simon drew on H.G. Wells's 1905 short story "Empire of the Ants" as source inspiration for the script.
