The virus may be a metaphor for media contamination itself — Mazzy's shock-jock past makes him both carrier and cure, suggesting the infection is really the toxic feedback loop of panic broadcasting. His job is literally spreading dangerous words to isolated listeners, and the film's climax forces him to weaponize that same machinery.

A French-language emergency broadcast in the film warns listeners to avoid 'baby talk' and terms of endearment — words the virus is shown to favor. Mazzy's climactic fix, redefining the word 'kill' as 'kiss' to save Sydney, plays out that same logic: infected words are neutralized by overwriting their meaning, a kind of linguistic euthanasia that kills the old meaning to save the host.

The infection targeting only the English language suggests a commentary on cultural imperialism: English as a pathogen that colonizes minds, with the virus simply making literal what metaphorical cultural erasure already does to non-English speakers.

Grant Mazzy, a washed-up shock jock reduced to small-town Ontario radio, starts his morning shift like any other. Then the calls come in. A mob attacks a doctor's office. People are eating people. Trapped in the church basement studio with his producer and engineer, Mazzy becomes the only voice reaching a panicked countryside, watching his broadcast become both weapon and quarantine line. McDonald traps you in that booth and makes you terrified of the next sentence.
