• The film had its world premiere at Sundance on January 25, 2020, with Neon acquiring U.S. distribution rights that March.
• Possessor exists in two versions: a standard R-rated theatrical cut and an MPA-Unrated edit officially retitled 'Possessor Uncut' — the two differ by less than a minute of added gore and brief nudity, not a full alternate edit.
• Effects artist Dan Martin (13 Finger FX) built the practical gore work by hand, including hyper-realistic dummy heads for the needle/scalp sequences and a wax head used for the melting-face hallucination shot.

The melting-face imagery during Vos's neural jack-in sequences suggests the possession technology doesn't just overwrite consciousness — it literally dissolves the boundary between minds. By the finale, when Vos's handler reveals the endgame, the question isn't whether Vos escaped. It's whether anyone survived at all, or whether the neural bleed produced a third entity wearing Vos's face.

Riseborough's flat affect and the way Vos has to visibly rehearse ordinary affection before she can perform it for her own husband and son reads less as PTSD than as someone who was never fully human to begin with. The film quietly entertains the possibility that Vos was always a corporate construct — a ghost in her own body long before the technology gave her a name for it.

The final reveal that Vos's own handler was pulling strings through her family the whole time reframes the entire film as a recruitment test. Colin wasn't the real assignment. Vos was. The company needed to know whether their best operator could survive losing control of a host, and losing everyone attached to her. She did. That's worse.

Tasya Vos runs corporate assassinations by brain-jacking unwilling hosts and puppeteering them through the kill. Each extraction scrapes more of her identity away. When she hijacks Colin Tate — fiancé to data-mining tycoon John Parse's daughter, Ava — to take out Parse and Ava both, the parasite fights the host. Colin's consciousness claws back through the neural warfare, and Vos loses the throttle. Two minds tear each other apart inside one skull while the body keeps pulling triggers. The film asks whether you can weaponize a person's soul without eventually losing your own — and by the end, Vos has traded away her whole family to find out.
