Prince of Darkness

• Carpenter wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass, an homage to Nigel Kneale's British scientist character Bernard Quatermass — right down to naming Victor Wong's character's institution 'Kneale University.' Kneale himself reportedly wasn't thrilled about the borrowed name.
• The church wasn't a set built in a warehouse — Carpenter shot at the real, then-abandoned Japanese Union Church of Los Angeles (120 Judge John Aiso Street, Little Tokyo), a historic 1923 building. Some interior scenes, including the team's sleeping quarters, were filmed on sets at Valencia Studios. Principal photography ran about five to six weeks, from mid-May to late June 1987, on a roughly $3 million budget.
• Alice Cooper plays the bicycle-wielding 'Street Schizo' who impales a grad student — the bike-impalement trick was lifted straight from Cooper's own stage show, using his personal prop. Executive producer Shep Gordon, who also managed Cooper, got him involved and had him record the title track 'Prince of Darkness,' which plays through the victim's headphones in that scene.
• The eerie broadcast-dream sequences weren't shot on Super 8 — Carpenter achieved their degraded, transmission-like look by filming the dream footage, playing it back on a television, then re-filming that TV screen with another camera.
• Universal released the film on October 23, 1987, and it came and went with little fanfare and mixed reviews, but it turned a real profit — grossing about $14.2 million worldwide against its roughly $3 million budget. It's since become one of Carpenter's more reassessed cult favorites.

The broadcast dreams aren't warnings from the future—they're the Anti-God's own propaganda, reverse-engineered into the students' subconscious to ensure someone carries the cylinder's contents through the mirror. The figure in the doorway at the end isn't showing Kelly what will happen; it's confirming what she already chose.

The film's real heresy isn't the Anti-God but the suggestion that religion and physics describe the same catastrophe from different angles. Wyndham's equations and the ancient texts say identical things in different notation—meaning faith was always just incomplete science, and science just rediscovered something it should have left buried.

Brian Marsh is the only survivor who retains his dream-visions, which frames him not as a hero but as a carrier. The final freeze-frame on his face suggests the transmission didn't stop with the church—it relocated into the last witness, making him a walking receiver for whatever's still trying to cross over.

A priest stumbles onto a secret the Vatican has buried for two millennia: a swirling green cylinder locked in a derelict church contains something that is not God's opposite but His anti-self—Satan's father, the Anti-God. A theoretical physicist and a hand-picked crew of grad students get trucked in to crack the mystery, armed with calculus and oscillation scopes. Bad call. The liquid wakes up. It leaks. It possesses. It broadcasts dreams of a dark future through mirrors. And something on the other side of the glass is waiting to come through.
