• Produced for roughly $530,000 CAD, funded in part by the Canadian Film Development Corporation and Cinepix (the Montreal genre-film outfit behind Cronenberg's early work), the film shot over about five weeks in Montreal, from November 1 to December 5, 1976 -- not an 18-day sprint as sometimes claimed.
• Marilyn Chambers was cast at executive producer Ivan Reitman's urging specifically BECAUSE of her existing fame and name recognition from her adult-film career -- Reitman pitched her to Cronenberg as someone whose name 'means something' and who they could afford, the opposite of an unknown-face casting choice.
• The retractable armpit stinger was a practical prosthetic built by makeup artist Joe Blasco using gelatin appliances and simulated blood flow -- one of the more iconic body-horror effects of Cronenberg's early filmography.

Rose's mutation reads as a grotesque puberty metaphor: a new orifice opens, she can't control it, and her body's new appetites turn everyone around her hostile. The clinic's experimental graft is the inciting incident, but the horror is that nobody prepared her for what her body would become.

The Keloid Clinic's arrogance in pioneering an untested graft procedure mirrors the medical establishment's historical disregard for women's bodily autonomy. Rose doesn't consent to what she becomes; she's rebuilt by men who treat her flesh as a test site.

The rabid plague functions as a viral sexuality metaphor where desire itself becomes the contagion. Each victim Rose penetrates becomes a vector, and the epidemic spreads through touch, kissing, proximity, everything intimacy requires. Cronenberg stages an STI apocalypse before anyone had language for one.

A motorcycle crash burns through Rose's skin and her future in one screaming skid. The Keloid Clinic patches her with an experimental skin graft, but what grows back isn't quite human. A fleshy stinger erupts from an armpit puncture wound and Rose discovers she can feed through it, draining victims who then rabidly attack everyone nearby. Quebec locks down. Martial law, blood tests, chaos. Cronenberg's patient camera watches a pandemic birth itself from one woman's body mutating under medical arrogance, and nobody has the language to stop it.
