Race with the Devil

• Race with the Devil was shot on location around San Antonio, Bandera, Castroville, Tarpley, and Leakey, Texas, with principal photography starting in January 1975. Its climactic, roughly twelve-minute chase sequence was built from real vehicles and practical stunts — no miniatures, no opticals.
• Screenwriter Lee Frost was originally set to direct, but 20th Century Fox pulled him and installed Jack Starrett about a week into shooting after executives discovered much of the dialogue was being improvised on set.
• Peter Fonda plays Roger Marsh, a former flat-track racer turned motorcycle-dealership owner in San Antonio — a deliberate inversion of his own Easy Rider persona. Instead of a countercultural drifter running from the establishment, Fonda's character here is the married, career-driven insider.
• Despite an on-screen satanic sacrifice, the film was released with a PG rating in the U.S. — achieved in part by optically fogging portions of the sacrifice scene. The UK issued its own AA certificate on June 19, 1975.
• The film ends on a freeze-frame: the couples' RV trapped inside a ring of fire lit by the surrounding cult, credits rolling over the image with the fate of the group left unresolved — one of the bleaker, more nihilistic closers of 1970s American genre cinema.

The cult doesn't actually need to kill the couples immediately — what matters is the ritual of pursuit. The entire road trip functions as an extended initiation or sacrificial performance, with the couples as willing participants simply by driving deeper into territory the cult controls. The witnesses become offerings.

The two couples are dead from the moment they park that first night and the film is a slow-motion descent into their own private hell. Every 'helpful' local is a figment of their collective guilt — they saw something they were never meant to see and their minds are processing the inevitability of punishment.

The film is a paranoid compression of post-Manson America, where the counterculture turned murderous and the establishment offered no protection. The cops aren't incompetent — they're in on it. The horror isn't the cult; it's that the cult is the community.

Two couples load up an RV for a Colorado ski vacation and witness a satanic cult sacrifice a woman in the Texas desert brush. They report it. The cops shrug. Then the road turns against them. Every gas station attendant, every passing truck, every helpful stranger is a plant. The cult doesn't chase — it herds. What starts as a vacation-on-wheels becomes a rolling siege, the RV itself the only thing between our heroes and a whole county of devil worshippers who don't need to outrun you, just surround you. Starrett weaponizes the open road and turns middle-America into a trap.
