Ravenous

• The film's score was composed by Damon Albarn (of Blur) and Michael Nyman — an unusual pairing that produced one of horror's most distinctive soundtracks, blending period-appropriate instrumentation with pulsing electronic and percussive elements.
• Robert Carlyle, already cast as Ives, is the reason Antonia Bird ended up directing: after original director Milcho Manchevski was fired roughly three weeks into the shoot and his brief replacement, Raja Gosnell, didn't sit right with the cast, Carlyle recommended his friend and frequent collaborator Bird (they'd worked together on 'Priest' and 'Face') to take over.
• Despite being set in California's Sierra Nevada, the film was actually shot in Slovakia's Tatra Mountains standing in for the mountain fort, with studio work at Barrandov Studios in Prague and additional scenes filmed in Durango, Mexico.
• Fox dumped Ravenous into theaters on March 19, 1999 with a famously confused marketing campaign (a nonsensical poster, a trailer built around one-liners set to a White Zombie cover) and barely any promotion. It opened at #18 for the weekend and finished its run with just over $2 million domestic against a $12 million budget.
• Guy Pearce was a vegetarian at the time of filming, but for the stew scene he actually ate real lamb stew on camera to sell the moment, reportedly spitting it out between takes.

Boyd's arc plays as a stealth conversion narrative rather than a redemption one. His war medal was already earned through the same ruthless survival instinct that later damns him — playing dead among the dead, then killing when the enemy's guard dropped. When he finally wrestles Ives into the bear trap in the fort's cellar and springs it on them both, it reads less as pure self-sacrifice than as strategy: pinning himself to Ives guarantees Ives can't heal or escape. Whether Boyd's final refusal to eat from Ives's body is genuine redemption or simply Boyd running out of will to keep feeding the hunger is left open — tellingly, the film's last bite of stew goes to Slauson, not Boyd, suggesting the appetite the story has been tracking just moves on to someone else.

Ives is functionally a frontier vampire masquerading as a Wendigo believer. His cabin, his charm, his recruitment pitch to Boyd — these are seduction mechanics straight out of Dracula. He doesn't need Boyd to believe in the Wendigo myth. He needs Boyd to believe in HIM. The mountain setting and cannibalism framing are just the period-appropriate clothing on a predator-procurer dynamic that horror has been running since Sheridan Le Fanu.

The film codes Fort Spencer as a purgatorial waystation, not a military installation. Every soldier there is already dead in some metaphorical sense — Knox, the fort's doctor, is a hopeless drunk; Reich and Cleaves are hollowed out by isolation and boredom; Hart is a commander who believes in nothing he's actually defending. When Ives arrives, he's not an invader; he's the only honest resident. The fort clears out as if it was never meant to hold anyone. The bear-trap death in the cellar seals the only space in the film that ever felt real.

Captain John Boyd earns a medal for cowardice at the Mexican-American War — playing dead among the fallen, then panicking his way into capturing the enemy position — and is shipped off in disgrace to isolated Fort Spencer in the Sierra Nevadas. A frostbitten stranger staggers in spinning a yarn about a wagon train disaster and a Colonel Ives who developed a taste for human meat. Boyd joins the rescue mission — and it turns out the stranger IS Ives, who's been using the mountain passes as his personal pantry. Cannibalism transfers the strength and spirit of the consumed, and Wendigo mythology gets weaponized into a survival doctrine. What follows is a bleak, blood-soaked game of cat-and-mouse where the only winning move might be eating your opponent. Guy Pearce plays a man who'd rather die than bite back — until he realizes that's exactly what Ives is counting on.
